Timothy Oakes, a dual Canadian-American citizen from Akwesasne, has pleaded guilty in the United States to multiple human smuggling charges linked to the deaths of a Romanian family of four during a failed border crossing in 2023.

According to the United States Department of Justice, Oakes, 35, was a central facilitator in a migrant smuggling network that transported individuals from Canada into the United States. Prosecutors said he earned approximately $1,000 for each migrant successfully moved across the border.

Oakes pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit alien smuggling, four counts of alien smuggling for financial gain, and four counts of alien smuggling resulting in death. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and could receive a life sentence.

U.S. authorities said that on March 29, 2023, Oakes helped transport a Romanian family to a boat on Cornwall Island. His brother, Casey Oakes, attempted to ferry the family across the St. Lawrence River into northern New York.

The boat capsized during severe weather, including strong winds, freezing temperatures and poor visibility. Casey Oakes and all four members of the family drowned.

The victims were identified as Florin Iordache, 28; his wife Cristina (Monalisa) Zenaida Iordache, 28; and their two young children, two-year-old Evelin and one-year-old Elyen. Both children were Canadian citizens.

Prosecutors said Timothy Oakes used his residence on Cornwall Island as a staging area where migrants from several countries were temporarily housed before being moved across the border.

Several other individuals connected to the smuggling operation have already pleaded guilty, while others were extradited from Canada to the United States and are awaiting trial.

The case highlights the dangers associated with illegal border crossings and the devastating human consequences of organized migrant smuggling networks operating along the Canada-U.S. border.
