CALGARY, October 20, 2026: A major transportation infrastructure project connecting Calgary International Airport with one of Alberta’s key logistics hubs is nearing completion, with the $37 million Airport Trail and Stoney Trail NE interchange now partially open to traffic.

Located in Rocky View County, the Stage 2 interchange project is expected to become fully operational in early November 2026, providing improved highway access, safer transportation routes and more efficient connections for commercial vehicles, local businesses and residents.

The project represents a significant investment in northeastern Calgary’s growing transportation network and is expected to strengthen one of the province’s important trade corridors.

The Alberta government contributed $23.8 million toward construction, while Genesis Land Development Corporation provided the remaining funding. Rocky View County was responsible for administering the provincial investment.

The interchange completes full directional access between Airport Trail and Stoney Trail, allowing motorists and commercial vehicles to travel more efficiently between major transportation routes.

One of the project’s most important benefits is the improved movement of commercial freight between Calgary International Airport and the CN Calgary Logistics Park.

The corridor plays a vital role in regional transportation, supporting the movement of goods between air cargo facilities, rail infrastructure, distribution centres and businesses operating throughout Calgary and Rocky View County.

The completed interchange is also designed to accommodate oversized and overweight commercial loads, providing a safer and more practical route for heavy transportation vehicles.

Previously, incomplete highway connections created additional travel challenges for some motorists and commercial operators. The new infrastructure is expected to reduce unnecessary detours and improve traffic circulation throughout the surrounding area.

Residents of northeast Calgary and eastern Rocky View County are also expected to benefit from shorter journeys and improved access to major roadways.

Alberta’s Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen, welcomed the development, highlighting its importance for transportation safety and the provincial economy.

Dreeshen said completing access to Stoney Trail from Airport Trail would strengthen the connection between Calgary International Airport and the CN Calgary Logistics Park while improving safety along the corridor.

The provincial government has identified transportation infrastructure as an important component of Alberta’s economic development strategy, particularly as Calgary continues to expand as a centre for logistics, distribution and international trade.

The improved interchange is expected to support businesses that depend on reliable transportation links for moving goods across the province and beyond.

PS Sidhu, president and chief executive officer of Genesis Land Development Corporation, described the project as an important improvement for Alberta’s transportation and trade network.

Sidhu said the interchange would strengthen a major trade corridor, support employment opportunities, improve road safety and make daily travel easier for families and businesses.

The participation of Genesis in funding the project also reflects cooperation between the provincial government, municipal authorities and the private sector in delivering infrastructure improvements.

Rocky View County Reeve Sunny Samra welcomed the investment, describing the interchange as an important transportation connection that could contribute to regional economic growth.

Samra said the project would create additional opportunities for residents and businesses while improving access to a critical part of the region’s road network.

The interchange was constructed by Graham Infrastructure, with engineering services provided by Urban Systems.

Its development comes as northeast Calgary and neighbouring Rocky View County continue to experience growth in industrial development, commercial activity and logistics operations.

Improved highway access is particularly important for companies operating warehouses, transportation fleets and distribution facilities, where efficient freight movement can directly affect operating costs and delivery schedules.

The Airport Trail and Stoney Trail connection is also expected to enhance the region’s ability to accommodate future transportation demand as industrial and commercial development continues.

For motorists, the most immediate improvements will be more direct highway connections and fewer complicated travel routes.

For businesses, the project offers the prospect of improved freight efficiency and stronger access to Calgary’s airport and rail logistics infrastructure.

Although the interchange has already opened to partial traffic, remaining work is scheduled to be completed before the full opening anticipated in early November.

Once operational, the $37 million investment will mark another important improvement to the Calgary region’s transportation infrastructure, strengthening connections between residential communities, commercial developments and major trade facilities.

The project also highlights the growing importance of coordinated infrastructure planning as Calgary and Rocky View County continue to develop into major transportation and logistics centres in Western Canada.
