Virat Kohli says he is determined to keep evolving as a cricketer after reaching another major milestone in his remarkable one day international career.

The India batter crossed 15,000 ODI runs on Sunday and followed the achievement with a spectacular unbeaten century against the West Indies, scoring 139 from 88 deliveries in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kohli’s innings included nine sixes and 10 fours as India chased down a target of 296. The century was the 37 year old’s 55th in ODI cricket and the third fastest of his career.

The performance came after Kohli challenged himself to adopt a more aggressive approach at this stage of his career.

He said the challenge of developing a different style of batting had given him renewed excitement and helped him play with greater freedom.

Kohli explained that his focus has been on raising his scoring rate once he becomes established at the crease while maintaining enough discipline to avoid unnecessary risks.

His approach has produced impressive numbers during 2026. He has scored 523 ODI runs during the year and has done so at a strike rate of 116.74, placing him among the leading run scorers in the format.

Kohli’s aggressive approach represents a shift from the style that defined much of his ODI career. Earlier in his career, he was often known for minimizing risk, building long innings and controlling chases through calculated batting.

That foundation remains, but Kohli now wants to make greater use of scoring opportunities once he feels settled.

“I promised myself I’m going to play positively because I can,” Kohli said after his century.

At the same time, he stressed that attacking cricket does not mean playing recklessly. His experience, he believes, allows him to maintain a balance between aggression and responsibility while ensuring the team’s objectives remain the priority.

Kohli also credited his physical conditioning for helping him maintain his new approach.

He said staying physically fit gives him the freedom to think clearly and execute the type of cricket he wants to play.

For Kohli, preparation is not only about time in the nets. He has traditionally placed considerable emphasis on remaining mentally fresh and focused on the present rather than constantly overworking on his technique.

He said maintaining a clear mind allows him to express himself naturally and become more comfortable with his aggressive batting template.

The veteran batter’s latest milestone also prompted him to reflect on his long international career.

Reaching 15,000 ODI runs places Kohli only behind Sachin Tendulkar on the all time list of players to reach the landmark.

Despite the significance of the achievement, Kohli said personal milestones have never been his primary motivation.

Instead, he said his priority has remained understanding the match situation and doing whatever is required for the team.

Kohli described himself as grateful for the opportunity to have played for India for so many years and credited his faith and hard work for helping him reach this stage.

The batter also spoke about the importance of remembering his journey and the sacrifices made before he became one of the world’s most recognizable cricketers.

He said the attention, fame and affection from supporters can sometimes make it easy for athletes to lose sight of where they started.

For Kohli, reflecting on his childhood and his early ambitions provides perspective and keeps him grounded.

He said representing India in front of large crowds remains a privilege and something he once only dreamed of achieving.

The veteran remains motivated by the opportunity to continue contributing to the national team and has already spoken about his desire to play a decisive role at the 2027 World Cup.

Kohli has previously said he would like to be involved when India plays in the World Cup final and, ideally, finish the match by hitting the winning runs.

His latest performance suggests he is preparing for that future with an approach that combines his traditional consistency with greater attacking intent.

At 37, Kohli is entering another phase of his career, but his motivation remains clear. He wants to continue improving, stay physically and mentally fresh and play an increasingly positive brand of ODI cricket.

For a player who has already achieved many of the game’s major individual milestones, the challenge now appears to be finding new ways to contribute.

Kohli’s message is straightforward: the numbers matter, but the bigger goal is continuing to perform for India while enjoying every opportunity to represent his country.

“I just want to put my head down, keep working hard, put a smile on my face and hopefully make other people smile too,” he said.
