Alberta’s Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, Tanya Fir, praised the continued growth of Alberta’s screen industry during her remarks at the Opening Night Awards Dinner celebrating the 40th anniversary of ShowCanada in Banff. Addressing industry leaders, exhibitors, distributors, filmmakers, and entertainment executives from across Canada and the United States, Fir highlighted Alberta’s commitment to strengthening the province’s film and television sector through new investments and industry partnerships.
Speaking during the anniversary celebration, Fir said Alberta is becoming one of Canada’s most attractive destinations for film and television production because of its world class locations, growing creative talent, and government support for the industry. She emphasized that the province is proud to support the continued expansion of Alberta’s media sector through an $8 million investment into the Alberta Media Fund under Budget 2026, along with a $25,000 contribution from the Alberta Film Commission to support this year’s ShowCanada event.
The minister noted that gatherings such as ShowCanada are important because they bring together key players from across the North American theatrical and entertainment business to build relationships, discuss innovation, and strengthen the future of cinema. She also described Banff as the perfect setting for the milestone celebration, calling it a place where storytelling comes alive both on screen and in real life.
The Opening Night Awards Dinner served as one of the major highlights of the annual conference, recognizing excellence and leadership within the film exhibition industry. The awards honoured cinema professionals, theatre operators, and industry innovators who have contributed to enhancing the movie-going experience across Canada. Special recognition was given in categories focused on leadership, customer service, sustainability, independent cinema operations, and box office achievement.
The Alberta Film Commission played a significant role throughout the event by helping support and promote the conference while showcasing Alberta as a growing hub for film and television production. Representatives from the commission met with industry executives, distributors, theatre owners, and production leaders to promote Alberta’s competitive filming environment, production incentives, skilled workforce, and internationally recognized landscapes.
Participants at ShowCanada 2026 included representatives from major Hollywood studios, Canadian distributors, cinema chains, independent theatre owners, technology companies, and entertainment organizations. Companies connected to the event included exhibitors and distributors associated with major studios such as Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, and Amazon MGM Studios, alongside Canadian cinema leaders including Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas.
This year’s conference carried additional significance as ShowCanada celebrated four decades of industry collaboration and theatrical entertainment in Canada. Organizers described the event as both a reflection on the industry’s legacy and a discussion about the future of movie exhibition in an era of rapidly evolving entertainment technology and audience experiences.
The Banff gathering also reinforced Alberta’s growing profile within the global entertainment industry. Provincial officials and industry stakeholders said continued investment in film and television is helping create jobs, attract international productions, and expand opportunities for Alberta’s creative economy while positioning the province as a leading destination for storytelling and cinematic production in North America.
