Ottawa: Mark Carney held a phone call with Mohammed bin Salman on April 29, 2026, to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East and explore opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations between Canada and Saudi Arabia.

Focus on regional security

During the conversation, Carney condemned recent strikes attributed to Iran targeting Saudi Arabia, expressing concern over rising instability in the region.

He also acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s role in promoting restraint and de-escalation amid ongoing tensions, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent further conflict.

Support for Canadians during crisis

The Canadian prime minister thanked Saudi authorities for assisting more than 300 Canadian citizens affected by the regional crisis, including efforts to ensure their safe transportation.

Officials described the cooperation as an example of strong coordination between the two countries during emergencies.

Expanding economic and strategic ties

Beyond security issues, both leaders discussed expanding collaboration across several key sectors, including:
