The race for the Stanley Cup has reached its most thrilling stage as the final four teams remaining in the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs prepare for high-stakes conference final battles filled with star power, emotional storylines and championship ambition.

The Eastern Conference Final will feature the Montreal Canadiens against the Carolina Hurricanes, while the Western Conference Final will see the Colorado Avalanche clash with the Vegas Golden Knights in a heavyweight showdown between two recent Stanley Cup champions.

The Western Conference Final begins Wednesday night in Denver, while the Eastern Conference Final opens Thursday in Raleigh.

One of the biggest storylines entering the conference finals is the anticipated battle between Vegas Golden Knights star Jack Eichel and Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon. Both elite centers have dominated throughout the playoffs and are among the NHL’s top postseason scorers. Eichel has collected 15 points in 12 playoff games while MacKinnon has recorded 13 points in only nine games. Their direct matchup is expected to become one of the defining themes of the series as both teams chase another Stanley Cup Final appearance.

Vegas enters the series riding the strong playoff performances of Mitch Marner, who continues to silence critics about his postseason consistency. In his first season with the Golden Knights following his departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marner has emerged as one of the NHL playoffs’ most dangerous offensive players. He currently leads all playoff scorers with 18 points and has delivered in crucial elimination games, helping Vegas close out both the Utah Mammoth and Anaheim Ducks in six games.

Colorado, meanwhile, continues to showcase one of the deepest rosters remaining in the playoffs. The Avalanche have already had 17 different goal scorers during the postseason, highlighting their balanced attack and offensive depth. However, concerns remain over the health of star defenseman Cale Makar, who is expected to miss Game 1 against Vegas because of an undisclosed injury. Makar’s availability could significantly impact Colorado’s Stanley Cup hopes as the series progresses.

Another major question surrounds Vegas captain Mark Stone, who has not played since May 8 due to a lower-body injury. The Golden Knights managed to eliminate Anaheim without him, but facing the high-powered Avalanche presents a much greater challenge.

In the Eastern Conference Final, the Carolina Hurricanes return to this stage for the fourth time since 2019 under head coach Rod Brind’Amour. Despite consistent playoff appearances, Carolina has struggled in previous conference finals, winning only one game combined during their last three appearances at this stage. The Hurricanes now hope this season will finally lead them back to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since winning the championship in 2006.

Carolina enters the series after an unusually long break, having not played since May 9. The nearly two-week layoff has sparked questions about whether the Hurricanes will experience rust when they return to action against a battle-tested Montreal Canadiens team coming off an emotional Game 7 overtime victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

The Canadiens have become one of the biggest surprises of the postseason behind rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes. The young goalie has already drawn comparisons to legendary Montreal netminders Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy after delivering several clutch playoff performances. Dobes has posted an impressive 8-6 playoff record and has excelled in elimination games, including a standout Game 7 victory against Buffalo.

Special teams may ultimately decide the Eastern Conference Final. Montreal’s power play has been one of the league’s most effective playoff units, converting at a 25 percent success rate, while Carolina owns a dominant penalty kill operating at 95 percent efficiency during the postseason.

The remaining four teams all carry rich championship histories. Montreal is chasing its record 25th Stanley Cup title and its first since 1993, which also remains the last championship won by a Canadian NHL franchise. Colorado lifted the Stanley Cup in 2022, Vegas captured the title in 2023 and Carolina continues to pursue its second championship in franchise history.

As the conference finals begin, the NHL playoffs now shift into a defining stage where superstar performances, goaltending excellence, injuries and playoff pressure will determine who advances to hockey’s biggest stage and competes for the Stanley Cup.
