Mel Gibson’s Resurrection of the Christ Reveals First Look at Jesus, Delays Release to 2027

Hollywood filmmaker Mel Gibson has officially unveiled the first look of The Resurrection of the Christ, the highly anticipated sequel to The Passion of the Christ, while also announcing major changes to the film’s release schedule.

The upcoming biblical epic, now divided into two parts, will see Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen portraying Jesus Christ, replacing Jim Caviezel, who famously played the role in the 2004 blockbuster.

According to Lionsgate, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One has been pushed from its original March 26, 2027 release date to May 6, 2027. The second installment, initially planned for the same year, has now been delayed until May 25, 2028.

The studio also released an official first-look image featuring Ohtonen in character as Jesus, giving audiences an early glimpse into what is expected to become one of the most talked-about faith-based films in modern cinema.

The original The Passion of the Christ became a global phenomenon after its release in 2004, earning more than $610 million worldwide and remaining one of the highest-grossing independent films in cinematic history. Directed by Gibson, the film depicted the final hours of Jesus Christ and sparked worldwide discussion across religious and entertainment circles.

Speaking about the sequel, Gibson described the project as deeply personal and spiritually significant.

“This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history,” Gibson said in a statement.

The new cast also includes Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett.

Production on the film has reportedly wrapped, with anticipation already building among audiences worldwide, particularly within Christian communities eager to see the continuation of the biblical story centered on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate also announced that Daydrinker starring Johnny Depp will now take over the March 26, 2027 release slot. The film, directed by Marc Webb, also stars Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline.

Industry analysts believe The Resurrection of the Christ could become one of the biggest faith-based cinematic releases of the decade, especially given the enduring legacy and global impact of Gibson’s original film.
