The discussion took place from Ottawa and focused on recent regional developments as well as the safety of Canadian citizens in Qatar.

Leaders Condemn Attacks on Qatar

During the conversation, both leaders strongly condemned recent missile and drone attacks launched from Iran targeting Qatar.

Prime Minister Carney expressed Canada’s solidarity with Qatar and acknowledged the country’s defensive efforts in responding to the attacks.

He also praised the leadership of Sheikh Tamim for helping ensure the safety of Canadians living or traveling in Qatar during the heightened tensions.

Cooperation to Support Canadians in the Region

The Canadian prime minister thanked the Amir for Qatar’s cooperation with Canadian officials in coordinating transportation options for Canadians who may wish to leave the country.

Officials from both nations have been working together to provide support and logistical arrangements for Canadian citizens in the region.

This cooperation, Carney noted, demonstrates the strong diplomatic relationship between Canada and Qatar during challenging times.

Focus on Diplomatic Solutions

The two leaders discussed ongoing efforts to reduce tensions and promote diplomatic solutions to the broader regional conflict.

Both sides stressed the importance of adhering to international law and avoiding actions that could endanger civilians or damage civilian infrastructure.

They warned that continued attacks could further destabilize the region and negatively impact the global economy and energy markets.

Protecting Regional Stability

Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed Canada’s support for protecting the security and territorial sovereignty of Qatar and its regional partners.

The leaders agreed that intensified diplomatic engagement is essential to prevent the conflict from expanding into a wider crisis with global consequences.

They also committed to maintaining close communication as the situation continues to develop.
