Prime Minister Mark Carney Marks Armenian Genocide Memorial Day with Call for Remembrance and Vigilance

Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a statement marking Armenian Genocide Memorial Day, joining Armenian communities in Canada and around the world in commemorating the victims of one of history’s darkest chapters.

Observed annually on April 24, the day—also known as Medz Yeghern—honours the memory of those who suffered and lost their lives during the atrocities committed against the Armenian people in the early 20th century.

In his message, Carney emphasized the importance of remembrance and acknowledged Canada’s official recognition of the Armenian Genocide in 2006. He noted that such recognition represents a commitment to ensuring that the suffering endured is neither forgotten nor denied.

The prime minister highlighted that April is recognized in Canada as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month, a time dedicated to reflecting on the consequences of hatred, indifference, and inaction.

Carney underscored that remembrance plays a critical role in confronting injustice and preventing future atrocities. He stated that acknowledging past crimes is essential to promoting accountability and fostering a more just and inclusive society.

The statement also called on individuals and communities to remain vigilant against hatred and discrimination, stressing that the responsibility to uphold human rights is shared by all.
