Renowned South African superfan Joy ‘Mama Joy’ Chauke has confirmed she will attend the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 after securing a new sponsorship deal, ending uncertainty over how her trip would be funded.

Mama Joy, a beloved and often controversial figure in South African sports culture, announced she will travel as an ambassador for lifestyle brand abOVEnormal. The global tournament is scheduled to take place across United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.

Funding Controversy and New Opportunity

The announcement follows previous controversy involving Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who stated that government funds would not be used to support her trip. The issue gained attention after reports that public funds had previously covered some of her travel expenses, including attendance at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Despite the setback, Mama Joy confirmed she has now secured alternative funding through her partnership with abOVEnormal.

“I am going to the World Cup. I am excited and over the moon about this opportunity,” she said, expressing gratitude for the support.

Brand Mission and Advocacy

The sponsorship also highlights the mission of abOVEnormal, founded by Masingita Masunga, who was born with cerebral palsy. The brand focuses on promoting inclusion, equality, and empowerment through sport and lifestyle initiatives.

Mama Joy said her involvement aligns with those values and aims to help amplify the organization’s outreach and fundraising efforts, including ongoing campaigns in Limpopo.

A Symbol of National Passion

Often seen cheering for South Africa’s national teams — particularly Bafana Bafana — Mama Joy has become a recognizable figure at major sporting events. While admired by many as a symbol of national pride, she has also faced criticism in recent years over funding transparency and public perception.

Nevertheless, her continued visibility and influence demonstrate her strong connection with fans across the country.

Looking Ahead to World Cup 2026

With her trip now confirmed, Mama Joy is set to once again bring her vibrant energy to the global stage, supporting her nation and representing South African fan culture at one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
