The Japan women’s national football team booked their place in the final of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 after defeating the Korea Republic women’s national football team 2-1 in a closely contested second semi-final on Wednesday.
Japan, displaying their trademark composure and technical superiority, controlled much of the opening half with patient build-up play and quick passing combinations. Their dominance paid off in the 28th minute when a perfectly weighted through ball split the Korean defense, allowing the Japanese forward to calmly finish and give her side a deserved 1-0 lead.
Korea Republic responded with determination, gradually growing into the match through disciplined pressing and swift counter-attacks. Despite a few promising moves, they were unable to find an equalizer before the interval as Japan’s defense remained organized and compact.
The second half witnessed a more aggressive approach from Korea Republic, who pushed forward in search of a goal. Their persistence was rewarded in the 57th minute when a powerful long-range strike found the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1 and reigniting the contest.
With momentum briefly swinging in Korea’s favor, Japan showed their experience and regained control of possession. The decisive moment came in the 72nd minute when Japan capitalized on a set-piece situation, converting from close range after a well-delivered corner caused confusion in the Korean penalty area.
Korea Republic pressed hard in the closing stages, creating a series of half-chances, but Japan’s defense held firm under pressure. A crucial save by the goalkeeper in the dying minutes ensured that Japan maintained their slender lead.
The victory sends Japan into the final, where they will compete for the continental title against host Australia, while Korea Republic will now play in the third-place playoff with China.
Japan’s disciplined structure, efficient finishing, and composure in key moments proved decisive in a high-quality encounter that showcased the growing strength of women’s football in Asia.
