Italian peacekeepers have replaced a vandalized statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon, offering a symbolic gesture of peace after an incident involving Israeli soldiers triggered international outrage.
The statue, located in the village of Debel, was reportedly damaged by an Israeli soldier, prompting widespread condemnation among Christian communities both locally and globally.
Israel Responds to Incident
Following the emergence of images showing the act of vandalism, Israel issued an apology and detained two soldiers, while questioning several others. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the actions as inconsistent with the values of the Israel Defense Forces.
The incident has further heightened tensions in a region already affected by ongoing conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.
Peacekeepers Deliver New Statue
On Wednesday, Italian peacekeepers escorted Paolo Borgia, the Vatican’s ambassador to Lebanon, to Debel, where they presented the replacement statue to the local community.
Residents welcomed the gesture with church bells and applause, viewing it as a sign of solidarity and hope amid difficult conditions. The new statue has been installed at the same location where the original stood.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the peacekeepers’ efforts, calling the act a powerful message of dialogue and reconciliation.
Life Under Conflict
Debel, located near Bint Jbeil, has been heavily impacted by ongoing hostilities. The village remains partially isolated, with residents reporting restricted movement, limited access to supplies, and ongoing security concerns.
The population has dropped significantly since the conflict intensified, with many families fleeing to safer areas. Those who remain face daily uncertainty, with reports of casualties from nearby airstrikes adding to the strain.
Community Embraces Message of Forgiveness
Local parish priest Father Fadi Felefli said the replacement of the statue has brought comfort to residents affected by weeks of violence. He also emphasized a message of forgiveness, reflecting core Christian teachings despite the circumstances.
The new statue will stand as both a religious symbol and a reminder of resilience for the community, while broader tensions in the region continue to unfold.
The incident underscores how cultural and religious symbols can become flashpoints during conflict, but also how gestures of goodwill may help ease tensions, even if only symbolically.
