Gurindervir Singh has etched his name into Indian athletics history after becoming the fastest man in India by setting a new national record in the men’s 100-metre race at the Federation Cup in Ranchi.
The 25-year-old Indian Navy officer stormed to gold with a sensational timing of 10.09 seconds, becoming the first Indian man to run the 100m in under 10.10 seconds.
The Indian Navy celebrated the achievement, calling Gurindervir “the fastest man in India” and praising his dedication, discipline, and remarkable speed.
His record-breaking performance also secured qualification for both the 2026 Asian Games and the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Gurindervir shaved 0.06 seconds off the previous national record, which had been set only a day earlier by fellow Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur during the semifinals.
In a dramatic sequence of events, Gurindervir had initially clocked 10.17 seconds in the semifinals to briefly claim the national record before Animesh surpassed it moments later with a time of 10.15 seconds.
However, Gurindervir reclaimed the crown in spectacular fashion during the final, producing his historic 10.09-second sprint to officially become India’s fastest-ever 100m runner.
Both athletes have now qualified to represent India in the men’s 100m event at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Federation Cup in Ranchi also witnessed another historic moment for Indian athletics as Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi became the first Indian man to break the 45-second barrier in the 400m race.
Vishal won the men’s 400m event with a stunning national record timing of 44.98 seconds, marking a landmark day for Indian sprinting.
The twin achievements by Gurindervir and Vishal have been hailed as a major breakthrough for Indian track and field athletics, showcasing the country’s rising standards in international sprint competition.
The performances in Ranchi are expected to boost India’s hopes ahead of major global events, including the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games next year.
