India Beat England 3-2 in Shoot-Out After Goalless Draw to End FIH Pro League Campaign on a High

The Indian men’s hockey team concluded its FIH Hockey Pro League campaign with a hard fought 3-2 victory over England in a penalty shoot out after the two sides battled to a goalless draw in regulation time at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London on Sunday.

India displayed tremendous defensive discipline throughout the contest before holding their nerve in the shoot out, where Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra and Hardik Singh successfully converted their chances to secure the bonus point. Defender Sanjay was named Player of the Match after delivering an outstanding defensive performance in a match dominated by both teams’ goalkeepers.

England made an energetic start and immediately tested India’s defence, earning an early penalty corner after Sam Ward forced a foul inside the circle. Indian goalkeeper Mohith Shashikumar produced a superb double save before denying Ward again moments later. He continued his impressive form by making another important stop against Sanford, frustrating England despite sustained early pressure.

India gradually settled into the contest and created their first meaningful opportunity through Abhishek late in the opening quarter. However, England remained the more threatening side during the early exchanges, with India’s disciplined defence and brilliant goalkeeping ensuring the opening period ended without a goal.

The hosts maintained their attacking intensity in the second quarter and nearly broke the deadlock through Bandurak, but India remained composed at the back. Jarmanpreet Singh responded with India’s best opportunity of the quarter, only for the England goalkeeper to produce an excellent save. England continued to control possession and attack regularly, but India’s defensive unit refused to buckle as both teams entered halftime level at 0-0.

India returned after the interval with renewed attacking intent and looked far more dangerous going forward. Hardik Singh led a swift counterattack from midfield before creating a scoring opportunity for Mandeep Singh, whose effort was denied by another impressive save from the England goalkeeper.

Hardik continued to influence the game and earned India a penalty corner in the 37th minute. However, Amandeep Lakra was unable to convert the opportunity as England’s defence remained equally determined.

A dramatic moment arrived late in the third quarter when England were awarded a penalty stroke after Yashdeep Singh was ruled to have fouled Henry Croft. India immediately requested a video referral, and after reviewing the footage, the officials overturned the decision after determining that the tackle had been clean. Following the reversal, England’s Nicholas Park received a green card.

India attempted to capitalise on the momentum by earning another penalty corner, but England’s goalkeeper once again came to his team’s rescue with an important save. Tempers briefly flared during the closing stages of the quarter, resulting in Dilpreet Singh receiving a green card, while England continued to search for the breakthrough through Thomas Sorsby.

The final quarter remained intensely competitive as England launched several attacks in pursuit of the winning goal. Goalkeeper Sanjay Karkera made a crucial save to deny the hosts before India responded with sustained pressure of their own. Sukhjeet Singh earned a penalty corner through an excellent attacking move, leading to multiple penalty corner opportunities, but England’s defence successfully repelled each attempt.

England mounted one final push during the closing minutes, but Jarmanpreet Singh intercepted a dangerous counterattack before Karkera produced another excellent save from a late penalty corner. With only seconds remaining, England were awarded another penalty corner, but India successfully challenged the decision through a video referral, resulting in the call being overturned and sending the match into a penalty shoot out.

India displayed remarkable composure in the shoot out as Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra and Hardik Singh all converted their attempts, while the Indian goalkeepers produced vital saves to secure a 3-2 victory.

The result underlined India’s defensive strength, resilience and ability to perform under pressure against one of Europe’s strongest sides. Sanjay’s commanding performance throughout the contest earned him the Player of the Match award, while both Mohith Shashikumar and Sanjay Karkera made significant contributions in preserving the clean sheet during regulation time.
