India and West Indies produced one of the most extraordinary batting displays in recent ODI cricket, with their three match series setting several scoring records and featuring outstanding individual performances from Shai Hope, KL Rahul and other leading batters.

The series produced 2,109 runs across three matches, the highest aggregate ever recorded in a three match bilateral ODI series. The previous record was 2,090 runs during India’s series against England in 2017.

The remarkable scoring was highlighted by two successful chases of more than 350 runs. India successfully chased 406 in the second ODI before West Indies completed a record chase of 352 in the final match in New Chandigarh.

West Indies’ 352 run chase became the highest successful run chase in their ODI history, surpassing their previous record of 328 against Ireland in 2019. It was also the third highest target successfully chased against India in the format.

India’s defeat while defending 351 was only the third occasion when they had lost an ODI after scoring at least 350. Only Australia have suffered more such defeats, with four.

The series was also notable for its extraordinary scoring rate. Teams scored at an overall rate of 7.43 runs per over across the three matches, the highest scoring rate recorded in an ODI series or tournament involving at least three games.

The chasing teams were even more aggressive, scoring at an average rate of 7.92 runs per over. The matches also produced only 30 wickets in total, demonstrating how strongly the conditions favoured the batters.

India finished the series with 1,057 runs, setting another record for the highest team aggregate in a three match bilateral men’s ODI series. That surpassed England’s previous mark of 1,054 runs against India in 2017. West Indies accumulated 1,052 runs, placing their total among the highest ever recorded in a series of this length.

Shai Hope was at the centre of the record breaking final match. The West Indies captain produced an unbeaten 162, guiding his team through the chase with a combination of power, control and composure.

Hope’s innings was the highest ever scored by a wicketkeeper captain in men’s ODI cricket. The previous record belonged to former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who made 149 against West Indies in Johannesburg in 2015.

His 162 not out was also the second highest score by a West Indies captain in ODIs, behind only Viv Richards’ 181 against Sri Lanka during the 1987 World Cup.

Hope’s innings also became the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in a successful ODI chase. His score matched Chris Gayle’s 162 against England in 2019, but Hope’s unbeaten effort gave him the record for the highest score in a successful West Indies chase.

He also produced another major milestone by reaching his 21st ODI century in 152 innings. Only Hashim Amla and Virat Kohli reached 21 ODI hundreds faster, doing so in 116 and 138 innings respectively.

The series also highlighted the continued importance of India’s middle order, particularly KL Rahul.

Rahul finished the final ODI unbeaten on 129, the highest score of his ODI career. The innings was also the third highest individual score by an Indian batter at No. 5 in men’s ODIs.

The performance strengthened Rahul’s record in the position. He now has four ODI centuries while batting at No. 5, putting him joint second among Indian batters alongside other leading performers, with only Yuvraj Singh having more at that position.

Rahul’s performance was part of India’s recovery after losing two early wickets for only four runs. India eventually reached 351 for 7, the second highest ODI total recorded by a team after losing its first two wickets for fewer than 10 runs.

Only Australia have produced a higher score in such circumstances, making 368 for 5 against Sri Lanka in 2006 after being reduced to 2 for 2.

The series also contained a major milestone for Rohit Sharma. The former India captain reached 10,090 ODI runs as an opening batter, joining a select group of players to have crossed the 10,000 mark while starting the innings.

Rohit reached the landmark in 202 innings, making him the fastest player to achieve it. Sachin Tendulkar previously held that distinction after reaching 10,000 opening runs in 214 innings.

The three match series also produced 10 individual centuries, the second highest total ever recorded in a bilateral ODI series. Only the five match India Australia series in 2016 produced more, with 11 hundreds.

Four of the centuries in the India West Indies series came from the two captains, Shubman Gill and Shai Hope, matching the highest number of centuries scored by captains in a bilateral ODI series.

What made the series particularly remarkable was the consistency with which both teams continued to attack despite the enormous totals being posted. India’s 406 run chase in the second match had already established the series as one dominated by aggressive batting, but West Indies responded by producing another record chase in the deciding contest.

The performances of Hope and Rahul also underlined the importance of versatility in modern ODI cricket. Hope combined the responsibilities of captain and wicketkeeper with an innings that controlled a demanding chase, while Rahul demonstrated his ability to produce a match defining contribution from the middle order.

The series ultimately became much more than a contest between India and West Indies. It turned into a statistical showcase of modern ODI batting, with record totals, successful high run chases, exceptional scoring rates and a remarkable number of centuries.

With 2,109 runs scored across just three matches, both sides have left their mark on the record books and produced a series that will be remembered for its extraordinary level of run scoring.
