Hong Kong national security police have arrested the owners of an independent bookstore on allegations of sedition and money laundering following an operation in the Sham Shui Po district.
Police officers conducted a search at Hunter Bookstore on Wednesday before taking two individuals into custody. Those arrested include 33 year old Leticia Wong Man huen, a former district councillor and member of the now disbanded Civic Party, along with a 32 year old local man who co owns the bookstore.
According to Hong Kong police, both suspects were arrested on suspicion of committing acts with seditious intent as well as money laundering offences under the Organised and Serious Crimes Ordinance.
Authorities said the investigation is being handled by the national security police, who carried out the search of the bookstore as part of the operation. Officials have not yet disclosed further details regarding the alleged offences or the evidence that led to the arrests.
The two suspects remain under investigation as police continue to examine the case. No additional information has been released regarding possible court appearances or whether further arrests are expected.
The arrests come amid the continued enforcement of Hong Kong’s national security laws, under which authorities have pursued investigations involving alleged offences related to sedition and national security, alongside other criminal allegations.
Police have stated that inquiries into the case are ongoing.
