The Dallas Mavericks are moving forward with ambitious plans to build a new $1 billion basketball-only arena, a project that could see the demolition of the iconic Dallas City Hall building designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei.
The franchise, which has played at the American Airlines Center for more than two decades, is seeking a venue dedicated solely to basketball. The current arena is shared with the NHL’s Dallas Stars, something team executives believe limits long-term growth and fan experience.
Push for a dedicated home
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts has emphasized the need for a standalone facility that would better serve fans and allow for expanded development opportunities. The proposed project includes not only a modern arena but also a large entertainment district spanning roughly 50 acres.
The team’s current lease at American Airlines Center runs through 2031, and the organization aims to transition to its new home shortly after. The move would mark a significant shift for the franchise, which won its only NBA championship in 2011, led by Dirk Nowitzki.
City Hall site under consideration
Among the potential locations, the Dallas City Hall site has emerged as a leading option. However, the proposal involves demolishing the existing building, a landmark designed by Pei, the same architect behind the Louvre Pyramid in Paris.
The idea has already sparked debate, with preservation advocates raising concerns about losing an architecturally significant structure, while supporters argue the redevelopment could bring major economic benefits to the city.
Commitment to Dallas
Despite speculation about possible relocation in recent years, including rumors linking the team to Las Vegas, Mavericks leadership has reiterated its commitment to staying in Dallas.
Welts recently stressed that the franchise’s focus remains firmly on building its future within the city, with the new arena project positioned as a long-term investment in both the team and the broader community.
If approved, the development would become one of the most significant sports infrastructure projects in Texas, reshaping Dallas’ downtown landscape while marking a new era for the Mavericks.
