Construction Begins on New $17 Million Pedestrian Bridge Linking Bridgeland to St. Patrick’s Island

Construction has officially started on a new $17 million pedestrian bridge project that will improve connections between Calgary’s Bridgeland Riverside community and St. Patrick’s Island, creating a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians, cyclists and people using mobility devices.

Site preparation began in mid July as construction crews moved equipment into the area and launched the first stage of the long anticipated infrastructure project. The development is expected to enhance mobility while strengthening links between nearby neighbourhoods, public transit and one of Calgary’s most popular riverfront destinations.

The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase includes building a brand new pedestrian bridge spanning the Bow River, connecting the north riverbank directly to St. Patrick’s Island. Once completed, the crossing will provide residents and visitors with improved access to recreational spaces, pathways and surrounding amenities.

The bridge has been designed around four key priorities, including accessibility, public safety, community connectivity and environmental sustainability. Engineers have also focused on ensuring the structure can be built efficiently while minimizing impacts on the surrounding area.

A second phase of the project will involve replacing the existing pedestrian bridge crossing Memorial Drive. Officials have not yet announced when construction on that stage will begin.

The new crossing is expected to significantly improve access between Bridgeland Riverside, the Bridgeland Memorial LRT Station, St. Patrick’s Island and Calgary’s extensive pathway network. City planners say the project will create a safer and more convenient travel route for people walking, cycling and using mobility aids while encouraging active transportation throughout the area.

The bridge proposal follows several years of planning and public consultation. The initiative gained momentum after the Bridgeland Riverside Community Association requested studies in 2020 to examine the need for a new river crossing. A feasibility study later confirmed the benefits of the project, paving the way for detailed design and construction planning.

Funding for the project is being provided through the Calgary General Hospital Legacy Fund, which has committed approximately $17 million toward the development. The committee overseeing the fund selected the bridge because of its potential to promote healthier lifestyles by encouraging walking and cycling while improving access to parks, public spaces and the Bow River corridor.

Once completed, the new pedestrian bridge is expected to become an important addition to Calgary’s active transportation network, providing residents with improved connectivity, enhanced safety and easier access to one of the city’s most popular recreational destinations while supporting future community growth.
