Carney’s Liberals Secure Majority Government After Sweeping Byelections

Mark Carney has strengthened his hold on power after the Liberal Party secured a majority government by winning all three federal byelections held on April 13, 2026. The results mark a significant political shift, giving the Liberals a stronger and more stable position in Parliament.

The breakthrough came when Liberal candidate Danielle Martin captured the key riding of University–Rosedale in Toronto, delivering the party its crucial 172nd seat in the House of Commons. Soon after, Doly Begum secured victory in Scarborough Southwest, while Tatiana Auguste clinched a closely contested race in Terrebonne, Quebec, solidifying the party’s majority status.

This outcome comes nearly a year after the Liberals formed a minority government following the 2025 federal election. Since then, Carney’s leadership has focused on expanding support through strategic alliances and attracting opposition MPs to cross the floor, helping the party reach the threshold required for a majority.

While the victory provides greater legislative control, it has also sparked criticism from opposition parties. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre argued that the majority was achieved through political maneuvering rather than a general election mandate.

Despite the criticism, the Liberal government is expected to move forward quickly with its policy agenda. Carney has signalled a return to regular governance, with plans to introduce new measures aimed at reducing the cost of living for Canadians.

The results also follow a dramatic political backdrop, including a previous razor-thin result in Terrebonne that required intervention by the Supreme Court of Canada and a subsequent byelection.

With a majority now secured, Carney’s government faces heightened expectations to deliver on key promises, including economic reforms and infrastructure development. While the parliamentary math is still tight, the Liberals now have a clearer path to pass legislation without relying heavily on opposition support.
