Mark Carney held a phone call with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on April 15, 2026, focusing on global security concerns, bilateral ties, and international cooperation.

During the conversation, Carney expressed condolences to Türkiye following recent school shootings, offering Canada’s support during a difficult time. The leaders also discussed the evolving security situation in the Middle East, with Carney reaffirming Canada’s solidarity with Türkiye amid reports of missile activity affecting its airspace.

Both leaders highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen economic and strategic relations between Canada and Türkiye. Discussions included expanding trade and investment, boosting defence cooperation, and exploring opportunities in nuclear and clean energy sectors. They also pointed to potential collaboration through the Defence Security and Resilience Bank.

As Türkiye prepares to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP31 in Antalya later this year, both sides expressed interest in advancing partnerships in climate action and clean energy investments.

On the ongoing war in Ukraine, Carney acknowledged Türkiye’s diplomatic role in facilitating humanitarian efforts and prisoner exchanges amid Russia’s continued aggression.

Carney also recognized Türkiye’s upcoming role as host of the NATO Summit 2026, calling it an important opportunity to strengthen defence and security cooperation among allies.

The two leaders agreed to maintain close communication as international developments continue to unfold.
