Mark Carney has announced plans to appoint Jonathan Wilkinson as Canada’s next Ambassador to the European Union, signaling a continued push to deepen ties with key international partners.

The announcement comes as Canada expands its diplomatic and economic engagement with Europe amid a shifting global landscape. Officials say the appointment is aimed at strengthening cooperation across trade, energy, defence, and advanced technologies.

Wilkinson brings decades of experience in public service, having previously served in several senior cabinet roles, including Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. His background also includes leadership roles in the clean technology sector and work in federal-provincial relations.

In his new role, Wilkinson is expected to work closely with John Hannaford, who currently serves as the Prime Minister’s personal representative to the EU, to advance Canada’s strategic priorities in Europe.

The move builds on recent milestones in Canada-EU relations, including the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership and Canada’s participation in the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, which opens new opportunities for Canadian industries and investors.

Carney also expressed appreciation for the contributions of Stéphane Dion, who has served as Canada’s Special Envoy to the EU and Europe.

The Prime Minister emphasized that strong partnerships with Europe are essential for ensuring long-term economic growth, security, and sustainability, particularly in an increasingly complex global environment.
