Canada’s women’s national soccer team delivered a determined performance despite a narrow 1-0 loss to Brazil in the final match of the FIFA Series 2026.

Ranked ninth in the world, Canada concluded the tournament with a solid 2-1 record, showing both resilience and adaptability as they continue preparations for upcoming international competitions.

Strong effort despite defeat

Head coach Casey Stoney praised her team’s performance, highlighting their determination and effort throughout the match. She noted that while the result was disappointing, the players demonstrated grit and a willingness to fight until the final whistle.

Canada created several scoring opportunities but was unable to convert them, something Stoney emphasized as an area for improvement moving forward.

Decisive moment in second half

After a scoreless first half, Brazil broke the deadlock early in the second period when Aline Gomes scored in the 47th minute. Despite strong defensive play and key saves from goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, the Canadians could not find an equalizer.

Captain Jessie Fleming and forward Evelyne Viens both came close to scoring, including a header that struck the post, but the team ultimately fell short.

Building toward major tournaments

Canada’s performance throughout the tournament demonstrated progress in team cohesion and tactical flexibility. The squad opened the series with a 4-0 win over Zambia and followed it with a 3-1 victory against South Korea before the loss to Brazil.

The tournament serves as a key step in preparation for the upcoming CONCACAF W Championship, which will act as a qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games.

Focus on growth and team culture

Stoney emphasized the importance of building a strong team culture alongside on-field performance. The squad spent extended time together during the tournament, strengthening chemistry and identity.

Despite the loss, Canada’s showing against a top-ranked opponent highlighted their competitiveness and potential as they continue to develop ahead of future international challenges.
