Canada has officially launched a nationwide online passport renewal service, allowing eligible Canadians to renew their passports from home through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal.
The new digital system is designed to make passport renewal more convenient and accessible, reducing the need for in-person visits and mailed applications. However, only a limited number of online applications are accepted each day, and applicants must meet strict eligibility requirements.
Who Can Renew a Canadian Passport Online?
Canadians may renew their passports online if they meet all of the following conditions:
- They are renewing their own passport.
- Their home and mailing address are in Canada.
- Their current passport was issued when they were 16 years of age or older.
- Their passport is a regular blue passport.
- It was valid for either five or 10 years.
- It displays their place of birth.
- It was issued within the last 15 years.
- It is either expired or will expire within the next six months.
- They do not need their passport within the next 20 business days, plus mailing time.
- Their name, date of birth, place of birth and gender marker will remain unchanged.
- Their passport contains no observations.
- The passport has not been seized or surrendered.
- They are not reporting a previously lost or stolen passport that was later found.
IRCC states that if a passport expires more than six months from now, it cannot be renewed online.
Photo Requirements for Online Renewal
Applicants must submit a digital passport photo that meets the following requirements:
- Taken in person by a commercial photographer.
- Taken within the last six months.
- Provided as a digital file, not a scanned copy of a printed photograph.
IRCC recommends obtaining both digital and printed copies in case applicants later need to apply by mail or in person.
Processing Time
Online passport renewals can take up to 20 business days to process, in addition to mailing time.
Once an online renewal application is submitted, the existing passport is immediately cancelled and can no longer be used for travel.
Because of this, Canadians with upcoming travel plans are advised to apply in person if they need their passport sooner.
Passport Renewal Fees in 2026
For adults living in Canada, fees remain the same whether applying online or in person:
- 10-year adult passport: CAD $163.50
- 5-year adult passport: CAD $122.50
Limited Daily Applications
Although the service is now available nationwide, IRCC accepts only a set number of online renewal applications each day. Canadians who are unable to access the portal may need to try again later.
