Calgary is observing Drug Awareness Week from May 3 to 10, 2026, as community leaders, educators, families, and health advocates continue efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and addiction. The proclamation, issued on behalf of Calgary City Council, recognizes the longstanding work of the Drug Awareness Foundation Calgary in promoting education, prevention, and support services throughout the community.

According to the proclamation, the Drug Awareness Foundation Calgary has been serving the community since 2006 with a mission to educate the public about the harmful effects of drug and alcohol dependence while supporting individuals and families affected by substance use. Over nearly two decades, the organization has become known for its outreach programs, awareness campaigns, school presentations, and public events aimed at helping young people make informed and healthy life choices.

The proclamation highlighted that education remains one of the most effective tools in preventing substance misuse by equipping individuals with knowledge, awareness, and resilience. It also noted that approximately 4.4 percent of Canadians meet the clinical criteria for a substance use disorder, underlining the serious impact addiction continues to have on families and communities across the country.

As part of Drug Awareness Week activities, Calgarians were encouraged to participate in the 15th Annual Walk and Talk event held at Rotary Challenger Park. The event brought together community members, volunteers, youth advocates, and local organizations to promote awareness, prevention, and support for those struggling with addiction.

Calgary City Councillor Raj Dhaliwal attended the special event as a guest and presented an acknowledgement letter from the City of Calgary in recognition of the Drug Awareness Foundation Calgary’s continued service and dedication to community awareness and education initiatives. Organizers and participants welcomed the city’s support, describing it as an important encouragement for volunteers and advocates working to address addiction-related challenges in the community.

Community leaders praised the Drug Awareness Foundation Calgary for its grassroots efforts and ongoing commitment to public education. Supporters say the organization has played an important role in fostering dialogue around addiction, reducing stigma, and encouraging families to seek help and support when needed.

The annual awareness week serves as a reminder that substance abuse affects people from all walks of life and that collaboration between communities, educators, health professionals, and local organizations remains essential in building safer and healthier communities for future generations.
