Calgary Celebrates the Timeless Legacy of Baba Bulleh Shah with Cross-Community Cultural Conference

CALGARY, Alberta — The universal message of love, peace, tolerance, and humanity preached by the great Punjabi Sufi poet Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah resonated throughout a well-attended cultural conference in Calgary, where political leaders, literary figures, scholars, and community members from Pakistani and Indian backgrounds came together to celebrate his enduring legacy.

Organized by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Alberta, Canada, the event highlighted Baba Bulleh Shah’s lasting influence on South Asian literature and Sufi philosophy while emphasizing the importance of promoting harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in today’s increasingly diverse societies.

Opening the conference, Chaudhry Tanveer Ahmed, President of Pakistan Peoples Party Alberta, welcomed the guests and said that Baba Bulleh Shah’s teachings continue to inspire generations with their message of compassion, equality, tolerance, and respect for all humanity. He stressed that introducing younger generations to the great Sufi poet’s philosophy is essential for preserving cultural heritage and strengthening social harmony.

The conference was hosted by Chaudhry Yaqoob Ahmed Chhina, Vice President of Pakistan Peoples Party Canada, while Nadeem Tufail, North America correspondent for Dunya News, served as the master of ceremonies. The keynote address was delivered by Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed, former Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan and senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party. He described Baba Bulleh Shah’s philosophy as a timeless guide for humanity, saying that the poet’s message of peace, tolerance, dialogue, and love is more relevant today than ever in a world facing increasing polarization and division.

The conference featured addresses by prominent Pakistani and Indian community leaders, scholars, and literary personalities, including Gurcharan Kaur, Rishi Nagar, Shan Ali, Tarloog Chugh Singh, Sohail Iqbal, Abdul Basit Tahir, Maqbool Hussain, Mateen Qazi, Naeem Bashir, and Shakeel Chughtai. The speakers reflected on Baba Bulleh Shah’s poetry and spiritual philosophy, emphasizing that his teachings transcend religious, cultural, and national boundaries while encouraging justice, equality, compassion, and respect for human dignity. They noted that his message continues to unite people across South Asia and around the world through shared cultural values and a common commitment to peace.

Among the distinguished guests were MLA Irfan Sabir, MLA Gurinder Brar, Azhar Hanjra, President of the Pakistan Canada Association (PCA), former PCA President Imtiaz Ahmed Kadhar, former PCA General Secretary Rana Satwat, Happy Mann, Senior Advisor to the Premier of Alberta, and Sher Akbar Khan, President of ANP Alberta. Their participation, along with that of numerous political, social, literary, and cultural representatives, underscored the significance of the event as a platform for intercultural dialogue and community engagement.

Throughout the evening, participants paid tribute to one of the most influential voices in Punjabi literature by discussing Baba Bulleh Shah’s poetry and its enduring relevance in promoting unity, social justice, interfaith understanding, and peaceful coexistence.
