CALGARY, Alberta: Members of Alberta’s Hindu and Sikh communities came together in Calgary for a special celebration of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, bringing together community leaders, provincial representatives and friends to mark two important occasions symbolizing light, freedom, hope and the triumph of good over evil.
The gathering provided an opportunity to celebrate the cultural and religious traditions of Hindu and Sikh communities while highlighting Alberta’s diversity, inclusiveness and multicultural spirit.
The celebration was attended by representatives of both communities, along with several members of Alberta’s provincial government. Special appreciation was extended to the Hindu Society of Calgary and Dashmesh Culture Centre Calgary for organizing a wonderful afternoon and bringing people together for the occasion.
Among the provincial representatives attending were Minister Myles McDougall, Minister Rajan Sawhney, Minister Muhammad Yaseen, Minister Mickey Amery, Minister Tanya Fir and MLA Chantelle de Jonge.
The celebration recognized the significance of Diwali, widely known as the Festival of Lights, which represents the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.
Bandi Chhor Divas holds special importance for the Sikh community. It commemorates the release of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, from imprisonment at Gwalior Fort, along with 52 Hindu kings. The occasion symbolizes freedom, justice, compassion and standing up for the rights of others.
The joint celebration also reflected the valuable contributions of Hindu and Sikh communities to Alberta’s social, cultural and economic development.
Such gatherings provide an important opportunity for people from different backgrounds to strengthen friendships, promote mutual understanding and celebrate the shared values that bring communities together.
Calgary’s Hindu Society and Dashmesh Culture Centre continue to play important roles in preserving cultural traditions, supporting community activities and bringing people together.
The afternoon celebration concluded with warm wishes for Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, recognizing the importance of unity, freedom, peace and hope in building a stronger and more inclusive Alberta.
BWtimes Canada extends its greetings to everyone celebrating Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.
