Uthal, Balochistan: A major breakthrough has emerged in one of Balochistan’s most significant bank robbery cases, as police have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the theft of Rs202 million (Rs20.2 crore) from a National Bank of Pakistan branch in Uthal, district Lasbela.

The case has attracted widespread attention following revelations by investigators that the alleged robbery planners were university students or former students who reportedly drew inspiration from the popular Netflix crime series Money Heist. According to police accounts reported by Pakistani media, the alleged mastermind, identified as Zohaib, was fascinated by the fictional character known as “The Professor” and reportedly imagined himself playing a similar role in carrying out an elaborate criminal operation.

The arrests were announced by Lasbela Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Najeebullah Pindrani during a press briefing on November 5, 2026, following an investigation that lasted approximately 18 months.

Police identified the three arrested suspects as Zohaib, Ghulam Murtaza and Bilal Akram. Investigators have identified two additional suspects, named Jawad and Bilal Hameed, who are reportedly still at large. Police say efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects and trace the outstanding stolen money.

A Carefully Planned Robbery

The robbery took place in February 2025 at a National Bank of Pakistan branch in Uthal, a town in Balochistan’s Lasbela district.

According to investigators, the operation involved detailed planning and the use of disguises intended to make the perpetrators appear to be members of security forces. The suspects allegedly wore counterfeit Frontier Corps uniforms, which police say had been ordered online.

Investigators also reported that a vehicle was repainted and used during the operation to avoid identification. Following the robbery, the suspects allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by setting their getaway vehicle on fire.

The incident initially raised suspicions of possible involvement by organised militant groups because of the nature of the operation and the use of security-force-style uniforms.

However, the investigation gradually shifted towards a group of young men connected through university, family and personal relationships.

The Money Heist Connection

One of the most unusual aspects of the investigation is the alleged influence of the Spanish crime drama Money Heist, internationally distributed by Netflix.

The series follows a criminal mastermind known as The Professor, who coordinates a complex robbery through careful planning and deception.

According to police accounts carried by Pakistani media, Zohaib allegedly identified himself with the fictional character and was fascinated by the idea of executing a sophisticated robbery.

Investigators believe that the suspects developed their own plan after being influenced by crime films and television productions.

However, the actual allegations relate to a serious criminal investigation, not a fictional television storyline. The case illustrates how entertainment-inspired ideas, when allegedly translated into criminal activity, can have devastating consequences for individuals, institutions and communities.

Financial Transactions Raise Questions

A major breakthrough reportedly came when investigators examined the financial records of the alleged mastermind.

According to SSP Najeebullah Pindrani, Zohaib’s bank account had previously shown transactions involving only relatively small amounts. Following the robbery, however, investigators reportedly discovered transactions totalling approximately Rs170 million over the subsequent 18 months.

Police also identified transactions of approximately Rs27.5 million through the bank account of a local businessman named Krishna.

According to investigators, the businessman acknowledged the transactions, and his statement was reportedly recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Police believe that the financial trail could help establish how the stolen money was transferred, distributed and invested.

Vehicles, Weapons and Other Assets Recovered

Investigators have also reported recovering several assets allegedly purchased with the proceeds of the robbery.

These reportedly include two Honda Civic cars, a cargo rickshaw, a Unique motorcycle, mobile phones, weapons and counterfeit security-force uniforms.

Police say that a portion of the stolen money was invested in different commercial activities rather than being spent entirely on personal purchases.

Reports also indicate that some of the money may have been invested in petrol pumps and public transportation businesses.

The recovery operation remains ongoing, as investigators attempt to identify other assets and establish the complete financial trail.

Police Officer Injured During Pursuit

The robbery also had serious consequences for the police personnel who attempted to pursue the suspects.

According to accounts published by Pakistani media, the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Uthal, Yar Muhammad, reached the bank after receiving information about the robbery and pursued the fleeing suspects.

During the chase, which reportedly continued for approximately 15 kilometres, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officer.

Yar Muhammad sustained two bullet injuries, including one near his eye, resulting in the loss of vision in one eye.

The suspects reportedly escaped after setting their vehicle on fire and fleeing towards a nearby mountainous area.

The incident became a significant part of the investigation and highlighted the dangers faced by law-enforcement personnel responding to armed robberies.

Three Arrested, Investigation Continues

Police have confirmed the arrest of three suspects after an extensive investigation involving intelligence gathering, financial records and technical evidence.

Reports indicate that the arrested individuals completed a 14-day period of physical remand before being transferred to judicial custody.

Investigators are also examining mobile phones and other digital evidence, while forensic analysis is expected to assist in establishing the alleged roles of the suspects.

Police are continuing their search for the two remaining suspects and investigating whether other individuals helped conceal, transfer or invest the stolen money.

The full amount recovered has not yet been established, and the whereabouts of the remaining proceeds remain a central question.

A Serious Case Beyond the Headlines

The Uthal bank robbery is more than a story about a television series allegedly inspiring a criminal operation. It raises important questions about financial security, the protection of banking institutions, the use of technology in criminal investigations and the responsibilities of young people in society.

A university education is intended to provide knowledge, discipline and opportunities for constructive contributions to society. The allegations in this case, if established in court, would represent a serious misuse of those opportunities.

For the banking sector, the incident also highlights the importance of strengthening security arrangements, improving surveillance systems and maintaining effective coordination between financial institutions and law-enforcement agencies.

The investigation is continuing, and further developments are expected as police pursue the remaining suspects and attempt to recover the missing funds.
