Construction is underway on the Northeast Athletic Complex (NEAC), adding much-needed indoor and outdoor recreation capacity in one of Calgary’s fastest-growing areas.

Located at 8500 40 St. N.E., the 35-acre, $170 million public recreation facility will serve people from northeast Calgary and across the city through Calgary’s first competition-capable cricket field, four outdoor multi-use artificial turf fields and a 162,500 square foot indoor fieldhouse. It will include cricket batting nets, spectator areas and team spaces as well as pathways, green spaces, picnic areas and playgrounds to support gathering, active living and community use.

“Breaking ground marks an important milestone in expanding recreation opportunities for people in Calgary,” shares Mayor Jeromy Farkas. “The Northeast Athletic Complex is an investment in more than fields and facilities. It’s an investment in creating opportunities to be active, build connections and feel a sense of belonging.”

“This is a turning point for cricket players and recreation users in Calgary and an important step toward meeting the growing needs of northeast communities,” said Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal. “I am excited to see the opportunities this complex will create for people to play, compete and connect.”

Public recreation facilities are essential community infrastructure. They give people places to be active, learn skills, connect with others and participate in community life. As Calgary grows, sustained investment is needed to renew aging facilities, add capacity and improve access in communities where recreation opportunities are limited.

“Investing in recreation infrastructure helps meet Calgary’s sport needs today and also sets us up to meet the needs of tomorrow,” said Ryan Atkinson, Acting Director of Public Spaces Delivery. “The Northeast Athletic Complex will add much-needed capacity in one of Calgary’s fastest-growing areas and create more opportunities for sport, recreation and community connection.”

The Northeast Athletic Complex advances GamePLAN, The City’s 25-year vision and strategic framework for public recreation. Council adopted GamePLAN in 2025 and established Making Waves as the service level for public recreation facilities and amenities. Making Waves is the only funding scenario in which overall recreation service increases to match population growth, helping add capacity and improve access across Calgary.

“Breaking ground on the Northeast Athletic Complex is an exciting moment. It marks an important step toward the addition of much-needed recreation and sport infrastructure in northeast Calgary,” said Jarret Hoebers, Acting Director of Recreation & Social Programs. “This complex will add world-class amenities to our inventory and support the health and well-being of the community. This investment supports GamePLAN’s long-term goal of more equitable access to recreation and sport opportunities across the city.”
