CALGARY, ALBERTA: Calgary firefighters responded to a significant early morning fire at a commercial property in the city’s southeast on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, successfully preventing the flames from spreading to neighbouring businesses. No injuries were reported, although one commercial unit sustained damage and will remain closed while authorities assess the aftermath.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the 100 block of Forge Road SE in the Fairview community at approximately 3 a.m. after a fire broke out behind a liquidation centre. When firefighters arrived, they encountered intense flames coming from the rear of one of the commercial units.

According to the Calgary Fire Department, investigators determined that the blaze originated among furniture stored outside the building before spreading into the interior of the affected business.

The situation required an immediate response as firefighters discovered that the flames had already penetrated the structure, creating a risk of further damage to nearby commercial units.

Battalion Chief Shane Pascoe said crews launched an aggressive firefighting operation, entering the building to tackle the flames from inside while simultaneously addressing the fire burning outside.

Firefighters managed to bring the majority of the blaze under control and prevent it from extending beyond the original unit. Their efforts also included removing smoke that had entered an adjacent business.

Following the initial firefighting operation, emergency personnel continued examining the property for concealed flames and remaining hotspots that could potentially reignite.

The Calgary Fire Department confirmed that neighbouring units on the left side of the affected liquidation centre would be returned to their owners, allowing those businesses to regain access to their properties.

However, the unit directly damaged by the fire will remain closed for an extended period as the building undergoes further assessment and recovery work.

Although the fire caused disruption to the commercial property, authorities confirmed that nobody was injured during the incident. The successful containment of the blaze prevented what could have developed into a more serious emergency involving multiple businesses.

Fire crews were expected to remain at the scene throughout Wednesday to monitor the damaged structure, investigate potential hazards and ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

Investigators have established where the fire began, but the circumstances that caused the furniture outside the building to ignite have not been publicly confirmed.

The Calgary Fire Department is seeking assistance from members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity or captured relevant footage in the area before the fire was reported.

Motorists who travelled through the Forge Road SE area around the time of the incident are particularly encouraged to review their dash camera recordings for anything that could assist investigators.

Anyone with information about the fire or potentially useful video footage is being asked to contact the Calgary Fire Department.

The incident highlights the importance of fire prevention and safe outdoor storage practices at commercial properties, particularly where combustible materials are located close to buildings.

While the affected business faces a temporary closure, the rapid response by Calgary firefighters helped protect surrounding commercial units and ensured that the emergency ended without reported injuries.
