OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed strong concerns to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday regarding a newly announced U.S.-Russia diesel supply deal, warning that the agreement undermines allied efforts to secure peace in Europe.
During their phone call, the two leaders discussed the deal—announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday—which allows Russia to supply millions of tonnes of diesel fuel to the United States. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney emphasized that the arrangement provides Moscow with fresh revenue, directly counteracting international strategies aimed at ending the war. The leaders also discussed enhancing coordination with allies to bolster Ukraine’s critical air defense capabilities.
The conversation took place as Trump suddenly announced an “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine on social media Sunday morning. Zelenskyy publicly supported the initiative but noted he was still awaiting official details from the White House, stressing that Russia must demonstrate immediate compliance by halting its ongoing strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Following his conversation with Zelenskyy, Carney also spoke directly with Trump on Sunday. According to a government readout, the Prime Minister thanked the U.S. President for his efforts in brokering the energy ceasefire and reiterated Canada’s backing of the agreement, while firmly echoing Zelenskyy’s demand that Russia uphold its end of the truce.
