Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov has been placed on long term injured reserve after suffering a lower body injury in only his second game back following a season long absence.
Barkov was injured during Thursday’s 4 3 overtime defeat against the San Jose Sharks. The 31 year old forward went down awkwardly while battling for the puck in the right corner during a power play in the second period.
After getting back to his feet, Barkov immediately signaled for the arena doors to be opened and headed toward the dressing room. The Panthers have not yet established how serious the injury is.
Barkov is scheduled to see a doctor Monday for further evaluation. His placement on long term injured reserve means he will miss at least 10 games and 24 days, although his eventual recovery timeline will depend on the medical assessment.
The injury is particularly concerning for Florida because Barkov had only just returned to action. He missed the entire 2025 26 season after suffering a serious right knee injury during the opening day of training camp. He underwent surgery the following day to repair damage to his MCL and ACL.
Despite missing the Panthers’ entire campaign, Barkov returned to international competition with Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland. Serving as Finland’s captain, he recorded three goals and eight assists in 10 games as his country captured the gold medal.
Florida coach Paul Maurice said the latest injury should not automatically be compared with the problems the team faced during Barkov’s lengthy absence last season. He pointed to the greater depth available to the Panthers this time around and said the team would focus on managing the situation one day at a time.
Barkov had played 20 minutes and 32 seconds in Florida’s season opening victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. The Panthers won that game 1 0 in overtime.
The Finnish center has been one of the most important players in franchise history since Florida selected him with the second overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. He has recorded 782 points, including 286 goals and 496 assists, in 806 regular season games.
Barkov has also produced 81 points in 94 Stanley Cup playoff games. He captained Florida to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025, establishing himself as the leader of the franchise during its most successful period.
His individual honours include three Selke Trophy awards, recognizing him as the NHL’s top defensive forward. He won the award in the 2020 21, 2023 24 and 2024 25 seasons. Barkov also received the Lady Byng Trophy in 2018 19 for his combination of sportsmanship and performance.
With Barkov unavailable, Lars Eller is expected to move into the top center role alongside Brady Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart. Eller will have his first opportunity in the new position when Florida faces the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.
Eller said he does not view the situation as an attempt to replace Barkov, emphasizing that no player can fill the role of the Panthers captain. Instead, he said his focus would be on playing his own style and contributing alongside two highly talented teammates.
Florida is already dealing with additional injury concerns. Forward Brad Marchand remains unavailable after undergoing offseason surgery for a lower body injury, while defenseman Gustav Forsling missed Thursday’s game because of an upper body problem. Forsling is expected to be evaluated before Sunday’s game.
The Panthers dealt with an extensive injury list last season, with several key players missing significant time. Among them were Matthew Tkachuk, Anton Lundell, Sam Reinhart and Jonah Gadjovich, along with defensemen Seth Jones, Eetu Luostarinen and Dmitry Kulikov.
Florida responded to the latest injury setback by recalling forward Sam Lafferty and defenseman Alexander Petrovic from Charlotte of the American Hockey League.
Maurice believes the Panthers are better equipped to handle injuries this season because of the depth within the roster. The coach said the current group includes experienced NHL players capable of stepping into larger roles when needed.
For Florida, however, Barkov’s absence remains a major setback. The captain is central to the Panthers’ defensive structure, leadership and offensive organization, and the team will now wait for medical evaluations to determine how long he could be sidelined.
With the season only beginning, Florida will hope Barkov’s latest setback proves manageable and that the captain can return to the lineup as soon as his condition allows.
