Two Air Canada employees arrested in alleged cocaine and cannabis trafficking investigation

Two Air Canada employees have been arrested by the RCMP in connection with an investigation into the alleged movement of cocaine and cannabis through Montréal Trudeau International Airport.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the two suspects were arrested Wednesday as investigators carried out searches at two residences and a vehicle in the Greater Montreal area. Police also searched an Air Canada employee work location in Dorval with the airline’s co-operation.

According to investigators, both individuals held positions connected to Air Canada’s ground operations at the airport.

Police allege the employees were involved in a conspiracy that used their access to secure airport areas to move luggage connected to an international drug trafficking operation. The investigation centres on allegations that cocaine was brought into Canada while cannabis was moved out of the country.

The investigation began in May after authorities intercepted 62.5 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside backpacks arriving on a flight from Punta Cana.

Investigators subsequently seized another 56 kilograms of cannabis during the investigation. RCMP released photographs showing two suitcases that police say contained the cannabis seized on July 10.

The arrests represent a significant development in an investigation focused on the potential misuse of airport access by individuals working in ground operations.

Airports contain highly restricted areas that are normally accessible only to authorized employees and personnel. Police allege the suspects used their positions to facilitate the movement of luggage through these secure areas.

The RCMP has not released extensive details about the alleged trafficking network or identified where the drugs were ultimately intended to go. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the seizures and the role allegedly played by the two employees.

Both suspects will be questioned and released while the investigation continues, according to police. Further legal proceedings are expected as investigators review the evidence gathered through the searches and arrests.

Air Canada said the two employees have been suspended while the investigation remains ongoing.

The allegations have drawn attention to security procedures surrounding airport employees and access to restricted areas. Ground operations workers can perform a range of duties involving baggage and aircraft operations, giving authorities an important role in ensuring that legitimate airport access is not exploited for criminal activity.

The investigation also highlights the challenges faced by Canadian authorities in preventing organized drug trafficking through international airports. Montreal Trudeau International Airport is a major transportation hub with extensive international passenger and cargo operations.

Authorities routinely intercept illegal drugs entering and leaving Canada, but trafficking organizations continue to attempt to exploit transportation networks and airport infrastructure.

The RCMP has emphasized that the investigation remains active and that the allegations against the two Air Canada employees have not been proven in court.

The airline’s decision to suspend the employees reflects the seriousness of the allegations while allowing the legal process and police investigation to continue independently.

Investigators are expected to examine additional evidence obtained during the searches, including any material that could establish how the alleged operation functioned and whether other individuals were involved.

The case could also lead to further arrests or charges if investigators uncover evidence linking additional people to the alleged trafficking network.

For now, the two Air Canada employees remain at the centre of the RCMP investigation, which began with the seizure of more than 62 kilograms of cocaine from a flight arriving from the Dominican Republic and later expanded to include a significant cannabis seizure.

Police have not indicated when the investigation will be completed, and further details are expected as the case moves through the legal process.
