Pakistan Returns to FIH Hockey World Cup After Eight Years as 2026 Tournament Schedule Is Confirmed

Pakistan is set to make its long-awaited return to the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup after an eight-year absence, with the complete tournament schedule, groups, and Pakistan Standard Time (PST) match timings officially confirmed for the 2026 edition.

The prestigious international tournament will be jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to August 30, bringing together the world’s top 16 national teams in a competition expected to showcase the highest level of international hockey.

Pakistan, one of the most successful nations in hockey history and a four-time world champion, qualified for the tournament after finishing as runners-up in this year’s World Cup qualifiers. Their return marks an important milestone after failing to qualify for the 2023 edition, giving fans renewed hope of seeing the Green Shirts compete once again on hockey’s biggest stage.

The tournament will begin on August 15 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, where India will face Wales in the opening match.

Tournament Format

The 16 participating nations have been divided into four groups of four teams each. Every team will play three group-stage matches.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the second stage, where the eight qualified teams will be divided into two new groups. Teams will carry forward the points earned against fellow qualifiers from the opening stage before playing two additional matches against teams from another group.

The top two teams from each second-stage group will qualify for the semi-finals, while the remaining teams will compete in classification matches to determine their final tournament rankings.

Pakistan’s Group Stage Fixtures (Pakistan Standard Time)

Pakistan opens its campaign against England on August 15 at 10:00 PM PST in what is expected to be one of the toughest opening matches of the tournament.

The national team will then face Wales on August 17 at 3:30 PM PST before taking on traditional rivals India on August 19 at 6:00 PM PST in one of the most highly anticipated matches of the group stage.

The second stage of the tournament will begin on August 21, with teams competing for places in the semi-finals based on their performances during the opening rounds.

The semi-finals are scheduled for August 28, while the third-place playoff and championship final will be played on August 30.

The bronze medal match will begin at 5:00 PM PST, followed by the World Cup final at 7:30 PM PST, where the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Champion will be crowned.

Pakistan enters the tournament determined to restore its place among the world’s elite hockey nations. Drawn alongside England, India, and Wales in Pool D, the Green Shirts face a challenging route to the knockout rounds, particularly with the highly anticipated clash against India expected to attract global attention.
