The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an in-custody death that occurred yesterday in the community of Abbeydale.
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at approximately 9:23 p.m., we responded to a residence located in the 0 to 100 block of Abbercove Road S.E., for reports of a residential break and enter involving a weapon. The suspect fled into the neighbourhood prior to police arrival.
Officers quickly located the suspect, and when they attempted to take him into custody, the man became combative and did not comply with police directions. At least one officer deployed their Conductive Energy Weapon. Shortly after, the man was determined to be in medical distress and was transported to the hospital, where he was later declared deceased.
Neither officers nor members of the public sustained injuries during the confrontations.
As is standard practice for in-custody deaths, ASIRT has been called in to investigate.
As this is now an active ASIRT investigation, no further details will be released.
