Australia Knock India Out of Women’s T20 World Cup to Book Semi Final Clash with West Indies

Australia maintained their unbeaten record at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup by defeating India by six wickets at Lord’s, eliminating the former champions from the tournament and securing top spot in Group One.

The victory confirmed Australia’s place in the semi finals, where they will face West Indies at The Oval on Tuesday. South Africa claimed the second semi final berth from the group after defeating Bangladesh earlier in the day, leaving India needing a victory over Australia to stay alive in the competition.

Despite producing their highest ever total against Australia in a Women’s T20 World Cup match, India were unable to defend 170 for four as the defending champions comfortably chased down the target with an over to spare.

Australia’s successful chase was anchored by experienced all rounders Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner, whose century partnership turned the match decisively in their team’s favour after an early setback.

India made the ideal start when they dismissed opener Georgia Voll with only the second ball of Australia’s innings. However, the breakthrough proved to be their only early success as Perry and Gardner responded with a composed and commanding partnership of 100 runs that gradually shifted momentum towards Australia.

Perry once again demonstrated her class on the biggest stage, producing a match winning innings of 56 runs from just 38 deliveries. Mixing elegant stroke play with calculated aggression, she ensured Australia remained ahead of the required run rate before eventually being dismissed by spinner Shree Charani.

Gardner continued the chase with equal authority, remaining unbeaten on 53 to guide Australia within touching distance of victory. Georgia Wareham struck the winning boundary to complete the successful chase and seal a memorable six wicket victory for the six time champions.

Perry’s outstanding performance earned her the Player of the Match award as Australia once again displayed the experience and composure that have made them one of the most successful teams in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Earlier, India produced an impressive batting display after being put into bat, posting 170 for four from their allotted 20 overs. It was their highest total ever recorded against Australia in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup and gave them genuine hope of keeping their semi final ambitions alive.

However, Australia’s experienced batting lineup successfully absorbed the pressure of a must win contest and executed the chase with remarkable discipline.

India’s elimination marked a disappointing end to a campaign that began with high expectations. Their hopes of reaching the knockout stage had already become more difficult after South Africa defeated Bangladesh earlier in the day, leaving India with no option but to overcome the unbeaten Australians.

Australia, meanwhile, completed the group stage with a perfect record, winning every match and once again underlining their status as one of the tournament favourites. Their balanced squad, experienced leadership and ability to perform under pressure have made them one of the strongest contenders to lift another Women’s T20 World Cup title.

With Australia finishing at the top of Group One and South Africa claiming second place, the semi final lineup is now complete. Australia will face West Indies in the opening semi final at The Oval on Tuesday, while tournament hosts England will take on South Africa in the second semi final on Thursday.

As the tournament enters the knockout stage, Australia will be aiming to continue their unbeaten run and move one step closer to adding another world title to their remarkable record, while India will return home reflecting on missed opportunities after falling short despite producing one of their strongest batting performances against their long time rivals.
