PESHAWAR, June 25, 2026 — Hundreds of mourners gathered in Imamia Colony, Gulbahar, Peshawar, on Thursday to participate in the 9th Muharram-ul-Haram procession commemorating the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala. The procession featuring the symbolic standard (Shabeeh Alam) of Hazrat Abbas Alamdar (AS) emerged from Sain Zareen Imambargah and proceeded through designated routes amid an atmosphere of mourning, devotion, and remembrance.
The annual observance drew a large number of devotees, community members, and mourners who came together to pay tribute to Hazrat Abbas (AS), the standard-bearer of Imam Hussain (AS), whose loyalty, courage, and sacrifice remain a powerful symbol of faith and steadfastness in Islamic history.
A major highlight of the gathering was a religious address delivered by renowned Zakir-e-Ahlul Bayt, Haji Akhunzada Shahryar Ali Karbalai. During his speech, he reflected on the significance of the events of Karbala and emphasized the lessons of sacrifice, patience, justice, and unwavering commitment to truth demonstrated by Imam Hussain (AS), Hazrat Abbas (AS), and their companions.
He noted that the message of Karbala continues to inspire people across generations and serves as a reminder of the struggle against oppression and injustice. He urged participants to uphold the values of honesty, unity, compassion, and service to humanity, which are central to the teachings associated with the sacrifices of Karbala.
Throughout the procession, mourners engaged in recitation of elegies, nohas, and remembrance of the tragic events that unfolded in Karbala more than fourteen centuries ago. The atmosphere remained solemn as participants expressed their grief and devotion through traditional mourning practices observed during the first ten days of Muharram.
The procession was organized under the supervision of Sharafat Ali, the Mutawalli and licensed administrator of Sain Zareen Imambargah, who, along with volunteers and organizers, ensured that all arrangements were in place for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the event. Volunteers assisted with crowd management, public safety measures, and services for participants throughout the gathering.
Residents from surrounding neighborhoods also joined the observance, reflecting the deep-rooted Muharram traditions that have long been part of Peshawar’s religious and cultural landscape. The city has a rich history of Muharram commemorations, with various imambargahs and community organizations hosting majalis and processions to honor the memory of Imam Hussain (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala.
The 9th Muharram procession concluded peacefully after participants renewed their commitment to the values symbolized by the sacrifices of Karbala. Organizers expressed gratitude to community members, volunteers, and security personnel for their cooperation in ensuring the successful observance of the event.
As Muharram commemorations continue, gatherings such as this serve as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Karbala and the timeless message of faith, sacrifice, courage, and resistance against injustice that continues to resonate with millions of people around the world.
