A major Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH religious gathering has been announced in Calgary, bringing together members of the local Muslim community for a series of commemorative programs during the first twelve days of the Islamic month of Muharram. The event will be held at the Base Ul Hujjaj Islamic Centre of Calgary, located at 3025 12 Street NE, Calgary, Alberta.

Renowned Islamic scholar and preacher Allama Syed Saiban Naqvi is scheduled to address the congregation throughout the first twelve days of Muharram. According to the organizers, daily Majalis and religious gatherings will commence after Maghrib prayers, offering worshippers an opportunity to reflect on the teachings, sacrifices, and legacy of Imam Hussain (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala.

The Muharram commemorations are expected to attract a large number of participants from Calgary and surrounding communities. Organizers have emphasized that the programs will focus on the spiritual, historical, and ethical lessons of Karbala, highlighting the values of justice, sacrifice, patience, and steadfastness in the face of oppression.

Allama Syed Saiban Naqvi is widely recognized for his scholarly lectures on Islamic history and contemporary religious issues. His addresses during the Muharram gatherings are expected to explore various aspects of the tragedy of Karbala and its continuing relevance for Muslims around the world.

The Base Ul Hujjaj Islamic Centre of Calgary has been actively serving the religious and educational needs of the Muslim community through regular prayers, religious education, community outreach initiatives, and special programs during significant Islamic occasions. The centre has become an important venue for religious gatherings and interfaith engagement in Calgary.

Organizers have also announced that the Muharram programs will be streamed live through the centre’s Facebook and YouTube platforms, enabling community members who are unable to attend in person to participate virtually. Community volunteers have been working extensively to make arrangements for the annual commemorations and to accommodate the anticipated attendance.

Hassan Nawab Rizvi is serving as the contact person for the event and has encouraged community members to participate in the commemorations and benefit from the religious lectures and spiritual atmosphere of the gatherings.

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar year and is one of the most sacred months in Islam. For Muslims around the world, particularly followers of Ahlul Bayt (AS), the month is a time of remembrance and reflection on the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was martyred along with his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The annual commemorations continue to inspire millions across the globe, emphasizing the universal message of truth, justice, human dignity, and resistance against tyranny.

With preparations now underway, Calgary’s Muslim community is expected to gather in significant numbers to observe the sacred days of Muharram, reaffirming the enduring message of Karbala and strengthening bonds of faith, unity, and community service.
