Calgary has earned another major international recognition after being ranked among the 100 happiest cities in the world in the 2026 Happy City Index, reinforcing the city’s growing reputation as one of the best places to live, work, and enjoy life.

The annual Happy City Index, published by the Institute for Quality of Life, evaluated 251 cities worldwide using 46 indicators across six major categories: citizens, governance, environment, economy, health, and mobility.

Calgary Ranks 74th Globally

Calgary placed 74th in the world with a total score of 6,258 points, making it one of only a handful of Canadian cities to secure a place in the prestigious global ranking.

The city was the third-highest ranked metropolitan area in North America, following Vancouver, which placed 39th, and San Francisco, which ranked 45th.

No other city in Alberta was included in the top 100.

What Makes a Happy City?

According to the report, the ranking considers both measurable outcomes and the conditions that support a high quality of life.

These include:

  • Life expectancy
  • Air quality
  • Employment levels
  • Access to public services
  • Strategic urban planning
  • Transportation and connectivity
  • Healthcare systems
  • Citizen participation

The index aims to identify cities that successfully create environments where residents feel healthy, secure, connected, and fulfilled.

Global Leaders in Happiness

The top five happiest cities in the world for 2026 were:

  1. Copenhagen
  2. Helsinki
  3. Geneva
  4. Uppsala
  5. Tokyo

These cities scored highly in sustainability, public services, healthcare, and overall citizen well-being.

Calgary’s Growing International Reputation

This latest achievement adds to a series of recent accolades for Calgary.

Earlier in 2026, Calgary was recognized as one of Canada’s top cities to work and play. The city has also appeared on global lists highlighting the best cities overall and top destinations for Generation Z to relocate.

Known for its strong economy, vibrant cultural scene, abundant green spaces, and proximity to the Canadian Rockies, Calgary continues to attract newcomers from around the world.

A City Built for Quality of Life

City leaders and residents alike have long emphasized Calgary’s balance of economic opportunity, community spirit, and access to nature.

From its extensive pathway network and world-class recreation facilities to its thriving downtown and diverse neighborhoods, Calgary offers a lifestyle that combines urban amenities with outdoor adventure.

As international recognition continues to grow, Calgary is further cementing its status as one of the happiest and most livable cities on the planet.
