City of Calgary adjusts hours of operation for Victoria Day 2026 long weekend

The City of Calgary has announced changes to facility hours, transit schedules, road closures, and free recreational activities for the Victoria Day 2026 long weekend.

The City of Calgary has announced adjusted hours of operation and service changes for the Victoria Day long weekend in 2026, including free recreational activities, transit modifications, road closures, and facility closures across the city.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead as several city services will operate on modified schedules from Saturday, May 16 through Monday, May 18, 2026.


Things to do during Victoria Day weekend

Calgarians can enjoy a range of outdoor and indoor recreational activities offered by the city during the long weekend.

City golf courses and driving ranges will remain open, giving residents the opportunity to tee off across seven municipal golf courses at five locations. Booking information is available through the City of Calgary golf services portal.

All indoor pools, fitness centres, arenas, and the Maxwell Soccer Centre will operate under regular weekend hours on Saturday and Sunday.


Free skating and swimming on Victoria Day

On Monday, May 18, 2026, the City of Calgary will offer free public recreational access at selected facilities.

Free skating (1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.)

  • Stew Hendry / Henry Viney Arena (814 13 Ave N.E.)

Equipment rentals will not be available, and standard public skate rules will apply.

Free swimming (two sessions)

  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Locations:

  • Acadia Aquatic & Fitness Centre (9009 Fairmount Dr. S.E.)
  • Killarney Aquatic & Recreation Centre (1919 29 St. S.W.)
  • Renfrew Aquatic & Recreation Centre (810 13 Ave. N.E.)

Due to high demand, residents are advised to attend only one time slot per visit.


Calgary Transit service changes

Calgary Transit will operate on a Sunday-level schedule on Monday, May 18.

This includes buses, CTrains, and On Demand services.

However, significant LRT disruptions will be in place from May 16 to May 19 due to maintenance and construction work.

Major LRT closures include:

  • All downtown stations
  • Blue Line: Westbrook, Shaganappi, Sunalta, Bridgeland/Memorial
  • Red Line: Sunnyside and 39 Avenue

Shuttle buses will replace train service along affected routes.

Additional shuttle services will support:

  • Sunalta Station access
  • Stampeders game travel from Chinook and Bridgeland/Memorial stations

Road closures and construction impacts

Multiple road closures will affect traffic across Calgary during the long weekend.

Southwest

  • Belmont Avenue S.W. closed (east of Belmont Drive S.W.)
  • Richmond Road S.W. eastbound closure at 32 Avenue S.W.
  • Several closures on 5 Street S.W. and 12 Avenue S.W.

Northwest

  • 16 Avenue N.W. reduced due to Bearspaw Feeder Main work
  • Memorial Drive delays near Sunnyside Flood Barrier construction
  • Closures on 4 Street N.W. and 19 Street N.W.

Southeast

  • 36 Street S.E. and Memorial Drive S.E. intersection closure
  • Lane reductions near 6 Street S.E. Underpass Project

Northeast

  • Edmonton Trail N.E. reduced to a single lane near 1 Avenue N.E.

Drivers are encouraged to use navigation apps and check real-time updates before travelling.


Parking, sweeping, and city services

  • Free on-street ParkPlus parking will be available on Monday, May 18
  • Weekend rates apply in parkades and surface lots
  • Calgary Parking offices and impound lot will be closed

Street sweeping will pause on the holiday Monday and resume regular weekday operations.


Facility closures

The following facilities will be closed on Monday, May 18, 2026:

  • Indoor pools
  • Fitness centres
  • Arenas (except designated free skate locations)
  • Maxwell Soccer Centre
  • Animal Services Centre
  • North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre
  • Wildflower Arts Centre (May 16–18 closure period)

Safety reminder

The City of Calgary is reminding residents to prioritize safety over the long weekend, particularly around roadways, pathways, and construction zones. Distraction and inattention remain major causes of accidents in urban areas.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow posted safety advisories.
