The City of Calgary has officially launched a new initiative called Sport Hub, a community-focused program designed to expand access to sports for children and teenagers aged 5 to 18 across the city.

The program aims to reduce common barriers to participation such as cost, transportation, equipment, and limited exposure to different sports. By bringing structured, coach-led sport lessons directly into schools and neighbourhoods, Sport Hub seeks to make physical activity more accessible and inclusive.

Calgary officials say the program is being delivered in collaboration with sport organizations, school boards, community partners, and funding agencies including United Way of Calgary and Area and Jumpstart.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas said the initiative reflects the city’s commitment to inclusion and community well-being, highlighting its role in helping young people stay active and develop confidence through sport.

City officials noted that Sport Hub is aligned with Calgary’s long-term recreation strategy known as GamePLAN, which focuses on improving access to recreational opportunities and supporting youth development through physical activity.

According to the City, the program also integrates support from community initiatives such as Planet Youth, which provides free sport lessons in selected communities to further reduce financial barriers for teens.

Karen Young, President and CEO of United Way of Calgary and Area, said the initiative helps strengthen youth connections and supports early prevention by ensuring young people have positive, structured activities available in their communities.

In 2026, Sport Hub aims to reach more than 45 communities and 90 schools across Calgary, offering structured sport programming that promotes physical literacy, teamwork, and personal development.
