The City of Calgary has unveiled an upgraded version of its “Plan Your Trip” hub, aiming to help residents better navigate traffic disruptions as the city enters another busy construction season.
Officials are urging Calgarians to “check before they go,” using the improved platform to stay informed about road conditions, detours, and transit changes before leaving home.
A Smarter Way to Travel
The enhanced hub is designed to simplify how residents access travel information by combining multiple services into a single platform. According to city officials, the tool reduces uncertainty by offering real-time updates and forward-looking travel insights.
Anthony El-araj, Manager of Traffic Services, said the initiative is focused on improving daily commuting experiences.
“Construction season is always busy and conditions can change quickly. This tool helps remove the guesswork so delays are easier to manage.”
Key Features of the Updated Hub
The revamped “Plan Your Trip” system introduces several new and improved features:
- A centralized starting point to check travel conditions
- An interactive traffic map showing closures, incidents, and live updates
- Future planning tools highlighting upcoming delays, events, and detours
- Real-time updates as traffic situations evolve
- Support for multiple travel modes including driving, transit, cycling, and walking
The platform is also accessible on mobile devices and integrates with navigation apps like Waze, allowing users to adjust routes on the go.
Growing City, Growing Traffic Challenges
As Calgary continues to expand, pressure on its transportation network is increasing. According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2025, the city ranks ninth among major Canadian cities for congestion, still performing better than larger urban centers like Toronto and Vancouver.
Troy McLeod, Director of Mobility, noted that infrastructure upgrades and utility work often impact road usage.
“This initiative is about helping people understand what’s happening and make informed decisions before they leave.”
Behind the Scenes: Real-Time Traffic Management
The city’s Traffic Management Centre operates around the clock to monitor and manage road conditions.
Key efforts include:
- Responding to collisions and congestion in real time
- Adjusting traffic signals to improve flow
- Providing live updates across multiple platforms
In 2024 alone, the city implemented:
- 528 new signal timing plans
- Over 5,000 real-time traffic adjustments
- Support for more than 1.6 million informed trips
Traffic updates are shared through:
- Live traffic maps and cameras
- Dynamic roadside message signs
- Advisory radio (107.9 FM)
- Social media updates
Advice for Residents
City officials emphasize that small adjustments can significantly improve travel experiences. Residents are encouraged to:
- Check conditions before departing
- Allow extra time during peak construction periods
- Consider alternate routes or travel methods
- Travel during off-peak hours when possible
- Stay updated without using devices while driving
Improving Daily Commutes
Officials say the goal is not to eliminate traffic, but to reduce uncertainty and improve predictability.
“When people have the right information before they leave, it changes their experience. This is about helping people move with confidence,” El-araj added.
