Mexico’s role as a historic World Cup host has been overshadowed by growing anger among fans, many of whom say ticket prices have placed the tournament beyond their reach.

The country will make history this summer as the first nation to host the FIFA World Cup three times, with matches scheduled in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. However, enthusiasm on the ground has been dampened by soaring costs and limited access for local supporters.

The tournament’s opening match in Mexico will be held at the renovated Mexico City stadium, formerly known as Estadio Azteca and now branded Estadio Banorte.

Fans Say Prices Exclude Local Supporters

Many Mexican fans argue that the pricing structure makes attending games nearly impossible for ordinary citizens.

  • Opening match tickets have reportedly ranged from $3,000 to $10,000
  • Secondary market listings for key matches have reached even higher levels
  • Most fans say prices exceed average monthly incomes in the country

One long-time supporter said the event no longer feels like a national celebration, arguing that the tournament “belongs more to wealthy international buyers than to Mexican fans.”

FIFA Defends Pricing Strategy

The FIFA has defended its ticketing model, stating that prices reflect global standards for major sporting events.

The organization also confirmed that:

  • A limited number of tickets were available starting at around $60
  • At least 1,000 low-cost tickets were allocated per match
  • Secondary market prices are set by ticket holders, not FIFA directly

However, critics say these lower-priced tickets are scarce and difficult for local fans to secure.

Stadium Upgrades, But Access Concerns Remain

The main venue in Mexico City has undergone major renovations, including:

  • Expanded seating capacity
  • New hybrid pitch installation
  • Updated security systems and LED displays

Despite these upgrades, fans reported logistical issues during recent events, including long walks to the stadium due to restricted vehicle access and limited parking availability.

Wider Concerns Beyond Football

Beyond ticket prices, some residents say the World Cup is contributing to broader social and economic pressures.

  • Rising rents in Mexico City linked to short-term rentals
  • Concerns over public safety and security during the tournament
  • Protests highlighting inequality and access to basic services

Some demonstrators have criticized the event as becoming increasingly “elitist,” arguing that local communities are being pushed aside in favor of commercial and international tourism interests.

Security and Expectations

Authorities continue to emphasize security readiness for millions of expected visitors, while acknowledging ongoing concerns in certain regions of the country.

Despite these challenges, officials insist Mexico is prepared to co-host one of the largest sporting events in the world alongside the United States and Canada.
