Two-Alarm House Fire in Calgary’s Mahogany Contained Despite Strong Winds

Fire crews in Calgary successfully contained a two-alarm residential fire in the Mahogany community despite challenging weather conditions, preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby homes.

The incident occurred late Friday morning in the Mahogany Square SE area, where firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire shortly after 11:20 a.m. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and visible flames coming from a two-storey house and quickly declared a working fire.

High Winds Complicate Response

According to the Calgary Fire Department, strong wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h significantly increased the risk of the fire spreading to neighbouring properties. A second alarm was called to bring in additional resources and personnel.

Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines and began an aggressive attack on the flames, while ladder trucks were positioned to set up elevated water towers. Two water towers were ultimately used alongside ground crews to extinguish the fire, which had spread through the roof of the home.

Quick Action Prevents Spread

Emergency crews also focused on protecting surrounding homes, evacuating residents where necessary and conducting searches to ensure no one was inside affected properties.

Officials confirmed that no one was inside the home where the fire originated and that no injuries were reported. Thanks to the rapid response, damage was contained to the single residence, allowing neighbouring homes to be safely reoccupied.

Multi-Agency Response

Calgary Police Service assisted with traffic control as several streets were temporarily closed to accommodate emergency operations. Additional support was provided by Emergency Health Services, ATCO, and ENMAX, with utilities shut off to the affected property as a precaution.

Investigation Ongoing

A fire watch team remains at the scene to monitor for potential flare-ups, while investigators continue to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.

The incident highlights the challenges emergency responders face during extreme weather conditions, where strong winds can rapidly escalate the risk of fire spread in residential areas.
