A special weather statement has been issued for Edmonton, warning residents to prepare for heavy snowfall and reduced visibility as winter-like conditions return to the region.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, bands of snow are expected to develop বৃহস্পতিবার night and continue through to Saturday morning, bringing rapidly changing and potentially hazardous conditions.
Forecasters say snowfall amounts will vary across the area, but some locations could experience quick accumulations of up to 10 centimetres. The agency also warned that localized heavy snow could significantly reduce visibility, particularly during periods of intense snowfall.
Blowing snow is expected to develop overnight and persist into Friday afternoon, further impacting visibility and making travel conditions more dangerous. Drivers are being advised to exercise caution and prepare for deteriorating road conditions.
The sudden shift in weather comes after an unseasonably warm start to the week across parts of Alberta. Temperatures in Calgary reached as high as 22°C earlier in the week, creating a stark contrast to the current cold snap.
Temperatures in Edmonton are forecast to drop sharply, with a high of around 3°C on Thursday and a low of -3°C. Wind chill values could make it feel closer to -10°C.
Friday is expected to remain cold, with flurries and strong wind gusts of up to 60 km/h. The temperature will struggle to reach 1°C, while wind chill could dip to -11°C in the morning.
Snowfall may continue into Saturday, with temperatures hovering between -2°C and -5°C. Conditions are expected to improve slightly by Sunday, which will remain cloudy with a high of 2°C and a low near -6°C.
Environment officials note that while the region will begin to warm up again early next week, the current conditions highlight the variability of spring weather in Alberta.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with forecasts and take necessary precautions, particularly when travelling, as sudden weather changes could impact road safety across the region.
