A man in his 40s has been taken to hospital in serious condition following a motorcycle crash in northwest Calgary, after losing control of his dirt bike and colliding with a tree.
Officers from the Calgary Police Service responded to the incident Monday afternoon on Valley Springs Road N.W., where road closures were put in place near Valley Brook Circle to allow emergency crews to manage the scene.
High Speed Cited as Key Factor
Police say the rider had been seen operating the dirt bike at high speeds in the area multiple times prior to the crash. According to investigators, a witness approached the driver and urged him to slow down.
Instead, the rider accelerated westbound before losing control and striking a tree.
Serious Injuries, Investigation Ongoing
The driver was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities say it remains unclear whether the injuries could have long-term impacts.
Police have not released the identity of the individual, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Public Safety Warning Issued
Officials are reminding residents of the dangers associated with reckless driving, particularly in residential areas.
“Driving at high speeds is a huge risk to the public,” police said, noting that neighbourhood streets often have pedestrians, including children, making such behaviour especially dangerous.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area temporarily and use alternate routes while crews cleared the scene.
