With just two months remaining before the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off, serious concerns have emerged over the readiness of Estadio Azteca, now rebranded as Estadio Banorte, which is scheduled to host the opening match.

The stadium recently reopened with a Liga MX clash between Club América and Cruz Azul, but instead of showcasing a fully prepared venue, the event exposed multiple shortcomings.

Players and officials reported logistical issues, including inadequate locker room conditions that lacked essential services. The situation left teams frustrated, raising questions about whether the stadium will be ready in time for the global tournament.

Fans also voiced strong dissatisfaction with their experience. Ticket prices were considered high, especially given the quality of the match and overall organization. More concerning were complaints about obstructed views in certain sections of the stadium, even for seats priced at premium levels.

Structural issues added to the growing list of problems. Reports of water leaks in different areas of the stadium circulated widely on social media, further damaging confidence in the venue’s readiness.

As the countdown continues, Estadio Banorte is set to host the opening game between Mexico national football team and South Africa national football team. However, with limited time left, there is increasing pressure on organizers to resolve these issues quickly.

The situation highlights the challenges of preparing major sporting venues under tight deadlines. While improvements are still possible, the current state of the stadium suggests that significant work remains before it can meet the expectations of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
