Calgary — Fire crews in Calgary responded to three separate garage fires over a span of three days this week, prompting safety reminders from the Calgary Fire Department as investigators work to determine the causes.

The first incident occurred on April 8 in the community of Haysboro, where firefighters were called shortly before 2 p.m. Crews arrived to find moderate smoke coming from a detached garage in an alley. With the garage door already open, firefighters were able to quickly advance a hose line and bring the fire under control. Officials confirmed the blaze was contained entirely to the garage, with no spread to nearby structures and no reported injuries. Investigators later determined the fire originated inside the garage, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Less than 24 hours later, on April 9, crews responded to a second garage fire in Kingsland under more challenging conditions. Heavy smoke and visible flames were seen coming from a detached garage when firefighters arrived. A nearby resident who noticed the smoke alerted occupants of the home, allowing them to safely evacuate before crews reached the scene. Firefighters deployed two hose lines to attack the fire, but access was hindered by a portable carport and a large recreational trailer positioned in front of the garage. Additional complications arose due to the volume of stored materials inside and around the structure, forcing crews to cut through sections of the rear wall to fully extinguish the blaze. While several roof trusses sustained damage, the fire was contained before spreading, and no injuries were reported.

The third fire broke out early on April 10 in the northwest community of Hawkwood. Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from an attached garage of a two-storey home, along with two pickup trucks burning in the driveway. Occupants had already evacuated after being alerted by smoke alarms. Crews quickly applied water to both the vehicles and the garage, successfully preventing the fire from spreading into the home. Utility providers ATCO and ENMAX attended to disconnect services as a precaution. Firefighters remained on scene throughout the day conducting fire watch operations while investigators examined the cause.

In all three cases, Calgary Police Service assisted with traffic control, while Alberta Health Services provided on-site medical support. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Although investigations are ongoing, officials confirmed that each fire originated inside a garage, prompting renewed safety warnings for residents. The Calgary Fire Department is urging the public to take precautions, including avoiding overnight charging of battery-powered devices, unplugging unused electronics and limiting the storage of hazardous materials in garages or enclosed spaces.

Fire officials say the recent incidents serve as a reminder of how quickly garage fires can escalate and stress the importance of early detection systems, safe storage practices and vigilance when using electrical devices.
