A serious morning collision in Calgary has left one woman in life threatening condition as investigators continue examining what caused a major two vehicle crash on Crowchild Trail.

According to Calgary Police Service, the collision happened at approximately 6:40 in the morning on Monday in the southbound lanes near University Drive Northwest.

Investigators say a white 2024 Toyota Corolla driven by a man in his thirties was travelling south when it collided with the rear of a 2010 Toyota Yaris operated by a woman in her forties.

A woman in her forties was seated in the rear passenger position of the Corolla at the time of impact.

Police believe the force of the crash caused the Corolla to break through a traffic barrier before leaving the roadway.

The vehicle then dropped from the southbound side onto the northbound lanes below, creating a highly dangerous scene during busy early morning traffic.

Emergency crews responded quickly and transported both occupants of the Corolla to hospital.

The female passenger suffered life altering injuries and remains in life threatening condition.

The male driver also sustained serious injuries and required hospital treatment.

The driver of the Yaris was not physically injured.

Investigators say there is currently no evidence suggesting alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.

Attention has now turned to whether speed may have played a role, especially because adverse weather conditions were present during the morning commute.

Road surfaces in Calgary early in the day often become hazardous when moisture, low temperatures and reduced visibility combine.

Traffic investigators are examining how those conditions may have affected braking distance and vehicle control at the moment of impact.

The section of Crowchild Trail where the collision happened is one of the city’s busiest commuter routes and often carries heavy traffic during early weekday hours.

A collision involving barrier penetration and lane drop creates additional complexity because investigators must study vehicle angle, impact force and roadway design.

Police traffic reconstruction teams continue reviewing evidence from the scene, including vehicle positions, roadway markings and any available witness accounts.

Incidents involving a vehicle crossing barriers into opposing traffic lanes are treated with high urgency because of the extreme secondary collision risk they create.

Fortunately, no additional vehicles were struck in the northbound lanes after the Corolla dropped below.

Officials continue asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to contact investigators.

For many Calgary drivers, the incident is another reminder that changing weather can sharply increase risk even on familiar urban routes.

Authorities often warn that speed which appears normal in dry conditions can become dangerous when visibility or traction changes suddenly.
