Jeremy Hansen has made history once again by speaking live with Earth from deep space during the ongoing Artemis II mission, giving Canadians a rare direct look into life aboard the spacecraft as it travels toward the moon.

The live communication marked the first planned space to Earth public interaction during the mission and represented a major moment for the Canadian Space Agency because Hansen is the first Canadian astronaut ever to travel beyond low Earth orbit.

Speaking from inside Orion spacecraft, Hansen described the experience of space travel as extraordinary, saying that even years of preparation and simulations could not fully match what the crew felt during launch and early flight.

One of the strongest moments of the conversation came when he described seeing Earth from deep space. According to Hansen, the crescent shape of Earth seen through the spacecraft windows created one of the most powerful visual experiences of the mission so far.

He explained that although astronauts train for technical tasks, nothing fully prepares them for the emotional impact of seeing Earth suspended in darkness from such distance.

The live session took place about three days into the ten day lunar flyby mission, with the spacecraft already moving far beyond the region where most previous Canadian astronauts have operated.

The mission launched on April 1 and carries four astronauts: commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and mission specialist Jeremy Hansen.

This flight is historically important because it is the first crewed mission to circle the moon in more than fifty years, reviving deep space human exploration at a scale not seen since the Apollo era.

During the conversation, Hansen also discussed what the crew expects when approaching the far side of the moon. He said scientists have planned observations including a solar eclipse effect created as the moon blocks the sun, a moment the crew hopes to document carefully.

This phase of the mission is considered especially valuable because the far side of the moon offers views and scientific perspectives unavailable from Earth.

Hansen also used the opportunity to address young Canadians watching from home. He encouraged them to pursue what they love and to share their interests openly, saying that collective support often helps people achieve goals that initially seem impossible.

His message carried extra significance because his own journey from Canadian military pilot to deep space astronaut represents one of the most remarkable achievements in Canadian space history.

For Canada, Hansen’s presence aboard Artemis II symbolizes a growing role in future lunar exploration, especially as international partnerships continue to expand around moon missions.

The NASA mission also serves as preparation for later lunar landing operations expected in future Artemis phases.

Over the coming days, additional live communications are planned, allowing Canadians to hear directly from Hansen again as the spacecraft completes its lunar flyby and begins return travel.

For many watching, the image of a Canadian voice speaking calmly from deep space while describing Earth as a glowing crescent has already become one of the defining moments of this mission.

It is not only a scientific event but also a powerful reminder of how far Canadian participation in human spaceflight has advanced.
