The cities of Calgary and Edmonton have joined together to submit a joint proposal to host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, an international tournament that is expected to feature the best professional hockey players representing their national teams. The initiative is being seen as an important step to bring a major global hockey event to Alberta and highlight the province’s deep connection with the sport.
The proposal outlines a shared hosting plan where both cities would stage games during the tournament. Officials involved in the bid believe that combining the strengths of both hockey markets will create a powerful case for Alberta to become one of the main locations for the international competition. The plan also reflects cooperation between two cities that normally share one of the most intense rivalries in Canadian hockey.
In Calgary, games would be played at the new arena known as Scotia Place, which is currently under construction in the downtown entertainment district. The facility is scheduled to open in 2027 and is expected to become the new home of the Calgary Flames. With a modern design and large seating capacity for hockey, the arena is being promoted as a perfect venue for international competition.
Edmonton would host games at Rogers Place, the home arena of the Edmonton Oilers. Since opening in 2016, the arena has hosted major playoff games and large sporting events. Its downtown location and modern facilities are considered ideal for attracting fans from across Canada and overseas.
The proposed tournament in 2028 is expected to bring together eight national teams made up of top professional players from the world’s strongest hockey countries. It would be a best-on-best competition where elite players compete for their national teams rather than club teams. The event is expected to last around two weeks and include several games played in both host cities.
Organizers believe the tournament could attract thousands of international visitors to Alberta. Hotels, restaurants, transportation services and local businesses in both cities would benefit from the arrival of hockey fans traveling to watch the games. Tourism groups supporting the bid say the event could create a strong economic boost for the region while also promoting Alberta as a global destination for sports and winter tourism.
The joint bid also highlights the strong hockey culture in Alberta. Both Calgary and Edmonton have produced many professional players and have passionate fan bases that regularly fill arenas during the professional season. By working together, the two cities aim to show international organizers that Alberta can provide packed arenas, strong community support and a memorable atmosphere for the tournament.
If the bid is successful, Alberta would become one of the central stages of international hockey in 2028. The event would bring the world’s best players to Canadian ice and give fans in the province a rare opportunity to watch global hockey competition at the highest level. Officials involved in the project say the decision on the host locations is expected after organizers review several proposals from different cities interested in staging the tournament.
